Question on cleaning during a hunting trip.

Dunno how it got there Fred, but on separate occasions I've been in camp with guys who tried to fire their BP rifles at the end of a 5 day trip and they did not go boom. We hunt the olympic penninsula in WA and the western cascades in OR. That's why I shoot mine every night.

Question on cleaning during a hunting trip.

Hey guys, I haven't hunted with my BP for a few years. My old process was to load in the morning and if (usually) I struck out that day, I'd fire the round somewhere safe near base camp at the end of the day. In the pacific nw, its damp enough that if you try to fire a gun that's been loaded...

    PRB in .54 for elk?

Double round ball loads are not legal for MZ season in WA state. fwiw. The regs specify a 'single lead projectile'...

Trade Rifle to the Range today

I agree - accuracy is significantly more relevant than velocity... I'll try 80g, and 90g, but ultimately will hunt with whichever one shoots the best for my particular rifle... Thx again for all the feedback everyone.

Trade Rifle to the Range today

Dawg - I'll have to work up from 70gr to 90gr with goex fffg and prb and see how the groups do. Have you chrony'd that load by any chance?

Trade Rifle to the Range today

Thx - I was excited enough I left out the caliber... Its a 54. The patches looked good - none of them were blown. I was initially worried when I picked up the fabric at walmart that it would be too thick (it seemed thick anyways) but it loaded and shot well.

Trade Rifle to the Range today

Took my new Lyman Trade rifle to the 50yd range today after work. Didn't have any cleaning gear with me but managed one each 3 rnd group of PRBs and Buffalo Bullet Ball-ets(sp?). With the PRB, 70g GOEX FFFg, Bore Butter, and Pillow ticking my first shot was right at point of aim, 2nd one an...

    traditions bbl compatibility?

Re how bad the stock: I removed too much material underneath the trigger assembly, trying to get it to line up with the lock. If I cock the hammer, and sit the trigger assy into the recess the hammer will fall without me actually touching the trigger. Also there is a fracture starting at the...

    traditions bbl compatibility?

what a coincidence - I bought a ccomplete cva hawken sight unseen for $70 this morning. I was looking at the DGW catalog and some of their parts (locks, triggers) say 'cva or traditions' so I think they are fairly similiar. If the traditions bbl fits, then I'll end up with 2 .50 cal bbls -...

    traditions bbl compatibility?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have a call into Traditions yesterday, haven't heard back but expect to soon. Also keeping an eye out on auctions / other sales. Right now I'm thinking I might end up with dual bbls in 50 and 54.

    traditions bbl compatibility?

Thx. :hmm: I have a hawken kit that I have totally wrecked the stock (first time builder). Trying to figure out what I'm gonna do with this unfired kit bbl... Nate

    traditions bbl compatibility?

Anyone know if a crocket and a st louis hawken bbl will interchange (for Traditions)? I'm kinda doubting it, but curious. Thanks in advance. nate

    Need some better sights

My traditions (kit) came with plastic front and rear sights and I called them to inquire about it. They sent/sold me a set of steel sights for $30~ or so, I don't recall the exact amount. Anyways, the new rear sight they sent me is nearly identical to a TC contender sight, except for the...

Thanks - I think we'll be going for deer this year. - A little easier to carry out ;)

bought my first smokepole kit... Traditions St. Louis 50cal

Good luck / congrats / have fun with the kit. I'm still building mine now, can't say much has to how it shoots or what it likes yet, but hope to know fairly soon. Nate

    Question on Washington Regs

When the Washington MZ regs say "Deer or Elk" and then lists one tag/fee does that equate to: 1.) Buy a tag, then harvest either a deer or an elk, whichever on you have an opportunity. One animal total. (As I read it, the deer and elk seasons overlap Oct 7-13) 2.) Tell us at the ticket...

    Paper Patch?

I had not thought of the paper absorbing volume over time... This would make a paper patch for hunting solution a bit tricky. More to experiment and test I guess. Thanks again to everyone for the informative feedback.

    Paper Patch?

Yes, will definitely need to find some type of lube for the paper. The article linked above mentions a mix of candle wax and vaseline. I would assume that the lube used with paper would need to be more of a liquid form in order to saturate the paper vs the kinds of lubes we might use to fill...

    Paper Patch?

Thanks for the replies - I plan to do a 100 round "break in" with PRBs @ 60gr FFFG before doing any serious Minie tests. With a new bbl I believe the lands to still be fairly sharp. Ultimately I'll try to compare Minie with Bore Butter vs Mini with Paper that has been trimmed to fit vs Mini...

    Paper Patch?

Anyone tried paper patching Minies? I am about to start casting Lee 390gr'ers for a 50 cal traditions 1:48 I was reading one of Fadala's books last night and he mentioned that ocassionally Minies are enough undersized that 2 layers of paper (cigarette rolling?) around the bullet in place of...
