    Buckhorn Skinners Squirrel Shoot??

Loyd is a very good cook. Makes good wine too. :) I've played camp-dog at his lodge more than a few times. :) I still hope to score a knife from him some day, he does nice work. Glad you had fun, they are a great bunch. I'm hoping to get back into it soon.

    Buckhorn Skinners Squirrel Shoot??

Hey there Lyod, Sparky aka Jeff here. :) I gotta get shooting again, havent seen you guys in ages. On a whim I looked up this forum again, I used to be fairly regular here. It's giving me the itch again. I havent shot in well over a year. :( Wonder if my stuff still fits. lol The "hill"...

    NEVER NEVER EVER

I use a metal "field rod" at matches so I don't ruin my wooden rod. Havent used a wooden rod too much, but not problems so far. I like what flintlock bob said about the plastic "noodle" rods. I bought one and experienced the same problem. The plastic rod is also so light it didn't help with...

    Loading the single shot pistol??

I finished a .54 Great plains pistol about 2 months ago. Have shot it about 40 times. I use .530 ball, and mostly walmart pillowticking patch. I think it is about .016? It is pretty tight, .010 patch was easier. Anyway, I can load either one off my body pretty easy. (left handed description)...

Which pistol to buy for 1st?

If you can go to a store that has a bunch, see what feels comfortable in your hand. Opinions vary a lot. Personally I like the 60' Army. Fits my hand great and points nice. In my experience most people like the 51' Navy best for feel. I think that is the same grip shape as used on a Colt SAA...

    Another bison horn

Initially I used a knife for the really big nasty stuff, then files, then sand paper to remove all tool marks. Havent polished mine yet. Others may have better ideas to contribute.

    Another bison horn

AZ, great job! You should have left the engrailing though! (Kidding) I liked it fine, but it looks just as good without it. Nice carving on the buffalo, I wish I could do that. Hey Curt! How's it going? (Sparky/Jeff here...) Leaving the rough grain might look pretty neat if...

Setting sights on ML'ing pistol... Range?

Hi, just finished a Lyman Great Plains .54 pistol kit. Shot it about 30 times yesterday. It seems to be dead on at about 10 yards, and hits about 3 or 4 inches high at 25yards. (with 35grains of 3f). Should I try to get it to point of aim at 25yds? 50yds? I guess I could try lighter loads, or...

    flintlock shooting tips?

Update from Vaquero Wow, this thread has taken on a life of it's own since I first posted 8 months ago! I appreciate all the responses and hope that many people besides myself have learned a thing or two about shooting a flinter. I no longer fear my flinter, but want more of them. (I have parts...

    New pile of parts

I bought them at a store, the guy who runs the place helped me put together appropriate parts. Not a kit, but kind of the same idea. Got everything but the rear sight. He didnt have any that would be right for the gun.

    New pile of parts

Sounds like the same boat. :) Should be fun though. I'm anxious to get going. I do see a lot of new tools in my future. Been dinking around taking the rougher spots of my trigger guard. Just thought of something. I'm going to take pictures of all this stuff before I start. Jeff

    New pile of parts

Hello all. I'm a gun builder! I have the parts to prove it! Actually I just bought a whole mess of stuff that should turn out to be a Lancaster-ish .54 rifle. Siler lock kit, and green mountain barrel. 15/16 flats. Brass trim, big wide butt plate, and trigger guard, double set...

    Round Ball Behaviour

This is a bit off topic, but interesting I think. I read somewhere, probably on this board, that rolling a roundball around on a rasp file so it gets little dimples all over it like a golf ball, will make it fly straighter from a smoothbore. I've never tried it.

Anyone had main charge go off while using ramrod ?

A guy in our club had one go off as he was hammering on a ramrod. I was not there, and don't know many specifics. What I am told is that the hammer went about 100feet in the air, and the guy's arm was numb for while. No major injuries. His new club name was "Sky Hammer". Wish I knew more about...

    Rocky Mountain College Rondy

Too bad you couldn't stay sneakon, it was a blast. I was up there Thursday and Friday night, and left Saturday after the big dinner. I shot the state primitive shoot up there, came in sixth is what Im told. That was a fun little match. The traders were great, I bought a pair of pants and some...

    Rogers' Ranger Hawk

I use my belt knife in the kitchen all the time. Best knife in the house! Never thought of my hawk as a kitchen utensil though. Hmmmm... Ball mold might work to crush garlic. char/tinder tin could work as a cookie cutter. Use bore butter to fry eggs or as a spice maybe. Hat = mixing bowl? If...

    Assembling the 1858 revolver.

All I can suggest is take it apart and try it again, using the diagram link above. I don't have my 58' anymore. You said the bolt has a spring steel piece on it. That is the "hand". Got it mixed up somehow? Not that I think they would swap. Can the hand be on backward? (added in edit...

Preferred means of attaching a powder horn?

Thanks for pointing that out Stumpkiller, I see it. Looks like a good idea. I'm currently working on a horn. Might use that idea. Thanks, Jeff
