    Northwest Trade Musket Vs. Fusil?

Rusty, I just bought a Caywood NW trade gun from a guy in our club. I havent handled a lot of muzzleloaders, mostly my GPR .54 . I couldnt believe how light and nice to handle the trade gun was. AS far as my persona, it might not be the greatest choice, "rocky mountain fur trade" but I know...

Raising the piont of aim on GPR

I took a good 1/8" or so off my GPR front sight. My rear sight is a primitive fixed sight from TOW. Use the bluing stuff that comes in a tube at any gunshop, and a q-tip, as mentioned above to fix the area. Even if you take too much, a new front blade for a GPR has to be pretty easy to get. Go...

    New toy on the way...

http://www.caywoodguns.com/left%20hand%20Northwest%20gun%202005.htm It's a smooth bore, but it also has a .54 rifle barrel. My goal was to get a "flintlock", so I posted here. I bought this same gun tonight from a great guy with one hell of a muzzleloader collection in my club. (he could...

    Plastic Patches

Im using Winchester AA hulls, and red wads, over anywhere from 55 to 75gr 2f goex. Usually #7 or 8 shot, about 1 ounce or 1-1/8. They really do melt. You might be using a better cup or somthing. Which one are you using? Jeff

    Percussion Ignition Problem

I learned some good tips reading this thread, my only comment is that my GPR seems to like CCI #11 magnum caps. With regular #11's (non-magnum) my GPR does the same thing your gun is doing a lot. Im going to try a hot shot nipple too though, and some of the other tips here. Jeff

    Plastic Patches

I use plastic wads in my cowboy action black powder shotgun loads. They melt and make a heck of a mess in the barrel. If those plastic patches do the same, I wouldnt use them. The break action shotgun is easy enough to clean, but a muzzleloader would be a pain in the rear to get all that stuff...

NEW silly things you've witnessed (or done)?

lehigh, first of all, I about fell out of my chair laughing when I noticed your picture icon. Second, if that is really you, and it wasnt a joke, Im glad you live so far away, cause it wouldnt be worth the travel to come beat me up! :: On to the topic at hand... I was once...

    loose GPR sights

http://www.trackofthewolf.com/categories...artNum=RS-PA-15 I used the above rear sight on my Great plains rifle. The primitive sight that came with it was not even close, way too small. I would have had to ping the heck out of the barrel to hold it, and that still would have been sketchy. I...

    Patching

As long as your ball/bore combination is happy with a .015 patch, I'm confident that the little extra cloth for the .58 VS .54 will not make any accuracy difference you will notice. At least in my experience, some of my home made pre-cut patches are a bit small, others are bigger and I have...

    Best design of target?

Our club uses a straight up plus sign/cross on a regular size piece of paper for tie breakers, and that is usually my best shot of the day. A simple thick horizontal and vertical line intersecting. I find it easy to aim at. I use fixed sights also. I filed my front sight down a little since our...

    Revolver cleaning

Dale, that is pretty much how it goes with real black powder and moving parts. I use black powder in my Ruger Vaquero .45's in Cowboy Action Shooting, and usually end up hitting them with a spray bottle of Dixie Blacksolve between every other stage. My '66 yellowboy lever action is worse. The...

    Revolver cleaning

They are really easy to assemble, dont be afraid to tear it down. A pard recently gave me a dragoon, he had torn it completely down, and I think he didnt want to put it back together. I cleaned the snot out of it, and put it back together just using common sense. Piece of cake. I rarely tear...

    reliable gun for round balls

A guy I shoot cowboy action with had a nice .50 Hawken for sale, wanted 150.00 I think it was a T/C might have been a CVA, not sure. If you are interested Private Message me, and I will see if he still has it, and put you in touch with him. He used to work for Shiloh Sharps, and he...

    heh heh- used rifle!

ouch! That gun has a sort of "neglected" look to it. Someone should buy it for 6.00, and take it to one of those "buy back" programs that police put on to get guns off the street. Would be fun to see the look on thier face.
