    dry firing?

I would use wood to negate possible mechanical damage to the lock. I found that dry firing helped me get used to the movement and noise of the lock operation. It was distracting. After practicing my 50 yd groups dropped from 6" to 3" over one week. Hope more practice will reduce them further.

    Leather or Lead?

I think lead will flow when stressed which would loosen up the clamping force.

    Rifling groove depth

I was thinking about the patch thickness needed to get a seal in the groove would increase the interferrence at the lands. It should require more effort to seat the PRB. My concern was "How much more effort?"

    Rifling groove depth

I was looking at Colerain barrels in 50 and 54 cal. Groove depth is .016. My T/c, Lyman and GM all have grooves approx. .010 deep. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to using this deep groove?

carrying a flintlock in the woods

I missed the fact that you used the full cock position with the hammer stall. That sounds like it would be an advantage when I am perched on my stand. Removing the stall would be quieter than cocking the hammer. Still hunting, I'll still use half cock, no stall. Thanks for the new perspective.

carrying a flintlock in the woods

Using a hammer stall is certainly safer than not using one but they are very inconvenient. The stalls I have are all too thick. At half cock the flint contacts the stall and pushes the frizzen open. What I would like to see is a stall that is thin enough to fit in the space. It would...

    sights

That white dot shows up great on the side of a deer. Not so good when using targets on white paper. Nail polish or white-out allows a cheap and easy way to puty the white on for a hunt and remove for the range.

    sights

I have the same problem. The one rifle that has sights I can see is a Lyman Deerstalker. I have a Lyman 57SML peep on the rear and a Lyman 17A target sight on the front. For some reason this combination works with my eyes. I can see the sights without glasses. The downside is it costs about...

    Kentucky Rifle on a budget

I'm with cowpoke. I shouldered the rifle in the store and was suprised how stable it felt. It swung smoothly. I shoot a lot of GM 32 " barrels and expected the longer 39" Blue Ridge to be unwieldy but it felt great. One review on the Cabels's website indicated the barrel is designed to be...

    why lock tuning?

I tuned my flintlocks per the procedure referenced by Paul. It worked great. The action got smoother and faster and group size shrunk which proved to me it worked.

    3f Black powder in a 50 Cal.

My Lyman BP Handbook and Loading Manual lists 3F loads for both 50 and 54 cal. but not 58. The Lyman Users manual ( included when you buy a gun) lists 90 gr 3F as max for 50cal and 100gr 3F for 54 cal. I use 90gr 3F in my 50, 54 and 58. Works fine and no problems

    Powder prices

You can get Goex for about $22/lb, including shipping, if you buy a 5lb lot. If you get addicted and plan to shoot more than 100 rounds this is the way to go. Try powderinc.com or mainepowderhouse.com. Their prices are similar. Their website will provide the legal form to fill out. When...

    Powder Quality?

I just reread the entire post and the document I was talking about is referenced above by paul. It is the link by the madmonk. Great reading.

    Powder Quality?

I looked into the Swiss/Goex question. I was suprised to find that Goex has finer particles than Swiss for any given grade. Swiss 2Fg grain size is 1.36 to .67 mm Goex 2Fg grain size is 1.19 to .60 mm So Goex has smaller grains in both ends of the range. 3Fg shows a larger fraction of smaller...

    Patch Lube

Great targets. How fast does liquid wrench evaporate? Do you have to keep wet patches in a bag to prevent drying out during a day of hunting? Do wet patches effect the powder charge?

    New Lyman GPR?

I use mineral spirits on a fiber brush to remove the preservative. It took a while to get it clean. Other solvents may be better but mineral spitits will work and I just happened to have a bottle on the shelf.

    Measuring patch material

One variable is how tight you push the jaws. I use a cheapo Sears micrometer. It has a clutch that limits how tight it can be turned and I think I get more consistent results.

    Crisco

I got acceptable results from crisco. Only problem was the mess. I dipped the patches into melted crisco and when I used them my fingers got very greasy.
