    .530 or .535 for a .54 lymans GPR

I recommend buying a small quantity of each (.530 and .535) and trying them both before settling on one. That .005 can make a huge difference in accuracy depending on your barrel and while I am sure Lyman (or whoever is making barrels for lyman) has pretty high tolorances, each barrel is going...

    Ramrod sticking past Barrel?

Been thinking about this one, myself. I have two rods for my .54 custom "Hawken" both of which stick out 2" beyond the barrel. While I appreciate the extra leverage the rods get pretty charred from shooting with the rod in the gun where it is while hunting. Looks? I can take it or leave it...

Vincent style rifle: who to build?

Who would be a good builder of an Ohio-style finter? Thanks, DG

    Thinking of a squirrel rifle

I have a really nice .40 that I'll be selling after the first of the year. It's a little too big for tree-rats and rabbits and not legal for deer here in MI. I plan to replace it with a .36 from TVM.

    Slanted Breech vs. Straight Breech?

Posted this photo under the photo topic. The top rifle was made in 1977 by Kenny Sutton of Union City, IN. This is the gun with the slant breech. It is a .54 cal with a 34" Douglas (xx) barrel. The stock is walnut. This gun is very special to me because it was owned by one of the fellows I...

Sorry about the mis-spelling. Typing too fast and not paying attention.

    Slanted Breech vs. Straight Breech?

I have two "Haeken" style rifles, one with a slanted breech one with a straight. Is one more desirable (and, if so why) and is one more accurate historically? Thanks

    My modest collection

Born and raised in Winchester. I try to go back every fall and spend a few days hunting deer. Funny, with millions of acres of forested state and federal land here in Michigan, there are few places I find as special as the edge of a corn field on a fall day. Cheers!

    My modest collection

Thought I would finally get around to sharing photos of my guns. The two Hawkens are special to me as they were made by local fellows near where I grew up in Indiana. Middle gun: 50 Cal is stocked in birdseye maple and has a 36" barrel made by the late Roger Bruss. Top gun: 54 cal stocked...

    Barrel for small game rifle?

Having a .36 cal small game flinter with a 42" Swampped barrel. If you were building this rifle what barrel would you use?

Douglas Barrels - were they good barrels?

Thanks, all. I just checked the barrel and it is stampped (XX) so I presume it is one of their premium barrels. The rifle is exceptionally well built and saw a lot of action in the late 70's-early 80's at Friendship. I'll try to get some photos up later this week. DG

Douglas Barrels - were they good barrels?

Just aquired a .54 Hawken style rifle built by Kenny Sutton in 1977. The rifle sports a 36" Douglas barrel. Were they good barrels?

    Pictures of TVM flinters, please.

First of all, thanks for the photos. Certainly helpful in deciding on the wood. I would still like to see a few photos of "Tennessee" rifles. Now, what's the difference between TVM (Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading) and the other manufacturer some of you have mentioned? I have spoken with Matt...

    Pictures of TVM flinters, please.

I am considering TVM to build a small game rifle (.32 or .36). Unfortunately, the pictures on the TVM website are pretty poor so I am hoping some of you can help out by posting photos of Tennessee and/or Southern guns made by TVM. Also, any guns they made using their "Super Premium" maple...

Small game rifle: 32 or 36 cal?

Funny how that works, isn't it. I'll keep my eyes on the TOW website for a sweet little .32 flinter, used. There is a "Vincent" Ohio, half-stock that I saw but fortunately after it was sold. Oh, well the hunts half the fun. Right?

Small game rifle: 32 or 36 cal?

It is my understanding that your standard 00 buckshot is a .32 cal ball. I can imagine funbling with them in the cold would be no fun though.

Small game rifle: 32 or 36 cal?

Looking for recommendation for a caliber for small game and just dinking around. I have a .40 but feel it's a little much for tree-rats and rabbits. I would like to go with a .32 but have heard they can be tough to clean, ramrods break and the foul quickly. The other option would be a .36...

.50 cal receipe for eastern Whitetails?

Now you have me thinking (I hate when that happens)... how does adding 5 gr. of powder effect velicity of a .490 ball? Also, when testing different loads how often do you run a wet patch - every 5 shots? What is a good routine in terms of shooting, wet patch, clean? As always, thanks. Doublegun
