Powder Incorporated sells black powder, and gives case prices for mixed granulations (like 10 cans of 2F and 15 cans of 3F). I jjust checked and they have Schetzen, Goex, and Swiss brands in stock now. Caps too.

Nitrating paper ..besides hurting stupid takes time!

Stump rot / stump remover is almost all potassium nitrate. Get some at your nearest hardware or garden store, such as Lowe's. That's what I use to nitrate paper. And also to kill stumps of my ash trees. Note that you want to use a good rag paper, such as tracing paper, which you can get from...

    DECEASED ASHES

About ten years ago a friend and fellow black poswer shooter died unexpectedly (heart attack on the couch), and his wife organized ths same thing, with the members of his motorcycle club and the gun club firing the ashes from his rifles. The ashes were finally divided, and it was no problem...

Anyone ever experienced burning embers in your barrel after a shot?

Both times I saw flashes were with rifled muskets, one firing blanks and the other with Minies. People don't clean during firing in those circumstances, so the only way to get a smoldering patch thread would have been in cleaning before the event. I would think that if it was a smoldering...

Anyone ever experienced burning embers in your barrel after a shot?

Yes, I have seen it happen twice, both with rifled muskets: Once in a skirniish shoot,: The shooter was and is a much better shot than I and always treats his guns well, so I don't believe the gun was cleaned badly. He was loading, poured his powder down and it flashed, It burned his hand...

    Lubing Minnies??

Re. dipping Minies cold - I have always lived with the slight mess that happens when the sizing die shaves off excess lube. I just scrape it off the sizing die and re-melt it to lube the next batch. Never tried warming the bullets. That's an intersting idea. How warm do you get them? You...

    Lubing Minnies??

I use a baby food jar about 2/3 full of lube (beeswax and tallow, the original Minie lube). I melt it by putting the jar in a small pot of water and heating it on the stove, making an improvised double boiler. Then I use needle nosed pliers to dip each Minie, holding them by the nose. Put...

    Stuck wedge

Years ago i made myself a brass drift for knockig revolver wedges out. I just hought a piece of 1/4 inch brass rod and filed one end thinner until it matched the width of the slot the wedge goes into. That and a mallet will get your wedges out without scarring up your revolver.

Can swabbing between shots encourage misfires?

I have thought for a long time that when my cleaning patch is too wet, my cap lock rifle is more likely to misfire. The trick is defining where 'too wet' begins. But sopping is definitely too wet. If I clean after every shot, then I'm not afraid of pushing much fouling down to the touch hole...

    Round ball molds

I have found Lyman molds are more durable. My Lee Minie molds have suffered from the core eventually coming loose, as the rivet pulls through. But since you can buy 4 Lee for the price of 1 Lyman, the prospect of the Lee mold eventually wearing out is not too bad. The Lee mold, being...

    Opinion on dog locks?

A friend of mine, the Bexar county archivist in charge of the old Spanish records, wrote a short article for our club newsletter about Miquelet muskets. The Miquelet lock appears to be a dog lock, and was used by the Spanish and in Mexico in the late 17th and the 18th centuries. There are some...

    How much my balls weigh?

I have been weighing my cast round balls and Minies recently, and I always find more than2 grains variation in a batch. I do cull those that are more than 2 or 3 grains off the averager weight, because those have got to have voids. As an example, here is the weight distribution of Minies I cast...

First attempt at pouring round balls.

The mold loos so clean - are you smoking the cavity? That helps get the cast balls out. Two cautions: 1 Do as the instructions that came with the mold say: Once in a while use a little bit of beeswax on the hot sprue cutter plate screw to lubricate it and let the plate move. 2. That screw is...

    Looking for Black Powder

It's better to buy your black powder by the case if you buy by mail / internet. Hazmat fee on an individual can pushes the price so high. It's much more economical to buy 25 pounds.

    Percussion or Flintlock?

Percussion here. No, I progressed to a matchlock. Shooting flintlock involves developing flint management skills. This can be frustrating which is the reason I didn't progress from a flintlock pistol to a flintlock rifle. Do you have a flintlock mentor? Don;t worry about 'correct', please...

Am I ready to shoot my Kentucky pistol when I get it put together?

About the rod and attachments - about what deermanct said above: I believe that Thompson Center kit will have 10-32 thread. So you will want to get a 10-32 threaded pistol rod if that is true. Me, I use jags, not a slotted patch holder. I think the jag does a lot better job of scrubbing...

Am I ready to shoot my Kentucky pistol when I get it put together?

A pistol rod of course - when (not if) you some day have to pull a ball you'll wish you had a pistol range rod and not just the under-barrel rod. A bore brush, especially if you are still going to shoot those sabots. Some non-petroleum based bore cleaner. Hot water is good when you are through...
