Hall breech loading flint lock? (pics)

Just somthing for you to think about. On tracks web sight they have a Hall converted to percusion ( as many were) for 3999.00. Does not look to be as nice a rifle as yours. Would give me pause before I tryed to shoot it.

$325 for an Austin & Halleck?

I have a Austin and Halleck I bought around 15 years ago. It is a good rifle, I have had no problems with it. It has taken 5 deer and has good round ball accuracy. After hunting with it for two years I had a "hunting" rifle built by TVM and placed it in reserve. I still loan it to rifleless...

TVM Early Lancaster - first firing

Deriner, I also have a rifle with a.44 inch barrel great shooter but a bit long in the woods. I had my TVM built with a 36" barel to make it a short hunting rifle. Had problems with the long one in shooting house. :cursing: I tryed to set up on a buck and the rifle hit every thing in shooting house.

    TVM - issues

It is not just UPS or the USPS all shipers rush the handeling of packages. I used to work at a major airport after a flight left they had to have a crew clean up the ramp to remove all the "fod" left by the loading crews. Hope it all workes out for you. Dont know if it would have made a...

    How to figure out load

Try shooting differant charges. All rifles are differant. My .54 Hawkin likes 90gr but my .54 other 54 shoots best with 70 gr.

    barrel interchange

My next rifle will be a .36. All I need now is to pick the style of the rifle, Southern, Tennessee or Viriginia? Every time I decide I look at pictures in tracks sight and change my mind. :youcrazy:

    Breaking in a new gun?

If your patches show damage lap the bore. My Early Virginia TVM has a Longhammock barrel and shot great from the start. Shoot her and find the best load first.

    CVA Hawken advice

Do order the mainspring vice. You can remove the mainspring with vicegrips but it can cause the spring to fail at the bend.

    CVA squirrel flintlock

The vent looks low, if the rifle shoots well I would not worry about it.

    CVA squirrel flintlock

I have fired several of the replacement powders, not a reliable powder in a flint. If you use black for the priming and a booster charge it will work. But if you can get the black powder why mess with the mixed loads? Check around I have to drive 100 miles to get powder. Check around to see you...

    .54 FFg or FFFg

Several years back I discovered that in my .54 the groups were tighter with 3F. I have killed 6 or 7 deer with 70gr 3F. Boller room shots a pass through. recovered one ball off side under the skin. The load has plenty of power on deer.

    First flintlock deer

.28ga (.54cal) Early Virginia Smoothbore meets 8 Pointer

Round ball Like the rifle TVM built my Early Virginia also. My rifle is not as purty as yours. Had my rifle built for swamp hunting. Plain with iron furniture.

.28ga (.54cal) Early Virginia Smoothbore meets 8 Pointer

Very nice. Today was the last day I had to hunt in muzzleloader season, we are in a tornado warning having heavy rain & hail. Getting woosey in my old age so here I set drinking coffee and playing on the computer. :surrender: Twenty years ago I probley would be hunting. :cursing:

After returning home from a hunt

I try to keep a fresh load in the rifle for hunting. I remenber reading that Wild Bill always unloaded his 51 Navy every night, cleaned and reloaded. Granted deer will not shoot back, a fresh powder charge is cheep.

After returning home from a hunt

I normaly fire the rifle and clean it when I get back to the camp. As damp as it is where I hunt it is cheep insurance.

How many shots from a flint?

I think it depends on the lock. I bought some from Dixie a few years back as a test. Would not work in two rifles but worked very well in a pistol I had. :cursing:

    Need info on longrifle

Well I do not know the style of the rifle but it was a good buy.

How Much Energy For Hunting Load ?

MY .54 works best with 75 gr of 3F. The deer are as dead as they were at 100 gr of 2F, the rifle is more accurate.
