    Lead ball vs arrow

From a little research, it appears that the typical "self" bow of the North American Indians had a draw of about 30-60lbs, no pulleys, composites, sights, special optics, mechanical releases, laser range-finders, etc. They also weren't using modern 3, 4 or mechanical blade arrows with...

    Ramrod launch

Been there, done that....bought the ramrod. (glad I'm not the only one) The last weekend before muzzleloading season, 2006, I managed to cram in a trip to the range. Immediately after firing, I noticed the range officer standing beside me, and he told me that I'd just launched my ramrod. He...

    CVA Bobcat replacement rear sight

Here's the official word from the Customer Service Manager at CVA: "We no longer carry the sidelock parts. Call Deer Creek at 765-525-6181, they can help you." :(

    CVA Bobcat replacement rear sight

Thanks. I didn't see any parts listed for the Bobcat originally, but will check with them to see if they have a replacement. I'll also look at Track the Wolf.

    CVA Bobcat replacement rear sight

I just picked up a lightly used CVA Bobcat, .50cal, which my son will hopefully use for his first hunt this year. Seems ok so far, but had a scope at one time (not usable in Colorado) and an after market rear sight which is much higher than it should be (8" high at 100yds when bottomed out). I...

    ballistic data of muzzleloaders

Güten Tag, Kirrmeister, I also have the Investarms 54 and use Hornady Great Plains .54cal 390gr HB-HP (hollow base-hollow point) bullets (#6629). This round has a ballistic coefficient of .15. According to Goex, with 80 gr of their FFFg, you'll have a muzzle velocity of 1460fps for 1145 ft...

    head shot

I've only used head shots to quickly finish off deer and one elk during modern rifle season. I'd dropped them with a chest shot from the '06 and finished them off with the 357 mag with hot handloads. The deer were point blank. The elk had laid down and was instantly finished off at 20 yds...

    Brush Buster

I guess I'll stop kicking myself for not taking the shot. The head shot wouldn't leave much for brain tanning or for a CWD test.

    Brush Buster

I'm new back to muzzleloader hunting. Last week, I passed a shot on a muley doe 30yds away because brush semi-obscured her vitals. :cursing: I was using a .54 Cabela's Hawken with 390gr Hornady Great Plains HP-HB bullet with 80gr 3F. My question is, how well do .54 bullets penetrate...

    Trophy or Meat?

You mean you're supposed to shoot something, not just lug a smokepole all over creation and get away from civilization for several days? I'll shoot the first (healthy) animal that my license allows. (CWD in some areas of Colorado)

    tired packin out my elk

CONGRATULATIONS!! Hauling an elk out is quite a chore. It's been waaaaay too long since I've had to do that.

    Guns of Bent's Fort

They've got some neat stuff there. I think they have reenactments down there periodically. You might contact the staff at the fort through their website, http://www.nps.gov/beol/

Do we carry too much stuff?

Very good reasons. I think my buddy mentioned breaking a nipple. Anyone have one break on them? On "better to have it and not need it, than ..." that's how I usually end up carrying waaay too much junk along on trips (just ask my wife). But all that "junk" has come in handy at times, so...

Do we carry too much stuff?

Sorry, no broken nipple story, but a buddy recommended it, and it's been so long ago I forgot why.

Do we carry too much stuff?

In my possibles bag (3 magazine M-16 pouch) I carry 4 speedloaders, starter, 3 film canisters with bore butter, spare nipple and wrench, spare caps and patch cloth. To limit the stuff I carry, I use a fanny pack with H-harness, containing a survival/1st aid pouch, poncho, water bottles, gloves...

What will you be hunting with this year

Well, I hope you had better luck than we did. Three rifles and we only saw three deer not on private property. I came closest, about 30 yds, but couldn't get a clear view of the vitals, so passed on the shot for vittles :( . As Ted Nugent said “The meat will come, but the heartbreak of a bad...

What will you be hunting with this year

First ML hunt in 9 years. Drew Muley Doe tags in Colorado. Using Cabela's Red River Hawken, .54cal, 390gr Hornady Great Plains HB-HP, 80gr Goex 3F. First hunt with my 12-yr-old son along :) (not big enough for the rifle yet :( ). Don't know if he or grandpa is more excited.

    High Country newbie

Hello. I stumbled across the site today and love it. I'm recently back into muzzleloading, after an 8 year hiatus, to break my 12-yr-old son into big game hunting in warmer weather. Didn't realize how much I missed it. Using a Cabela's Red River .54-cal. rifle.
