    Finshed GPR

Anyone have an opinion on the polished cap? Like it, hate it?

    Finshed GPR

Tg, It is effectively a tru-oil finish. The wood was fairly light in color so I started with Casey's walnut stain and then started with the tru-oil. The first step was to apply it continuously until it stopped soaking in immediately. I then let each coat dry until it was completely dry...

    Lyman GPR Kit Help

Well, I finished the rifle today and I am very pleased. A picture of the finished product is in the photos section. GPRs have my vote for a very nice product for the money.

    Finshed GPR

Thank you. You are correct sir. She will be burning through powder and ball here quickly. I am looking for a full stock .32-.40 Kentucky style rifle for my next project. That or I wait for the Hawken to come back so I can strip and finish the stock. If you don't mind my fishing for...

what brand of lock on a T/C flinter???

Bob, You have you thought of stripping the wood that is there and trying a tru-oil finish? From your picture, that looks like a pretty nice piece of wood.

    Miroku muzzleloader

Well, it turns out to be a Hi-pro made by Miroku. It was a .45 cal kentucky style rifle. I was less than impressed with it. The mainspring is missing and the hammer doesn't stike correctly. The lock is marked "Japan" on the inside. It would seem that it could be had for <$100, but I am not...

    Miroku muzzleloader

Has anyone seen or heard of a Miroku (Browning) muzzleloader? I may have a chance to pick one up and was curious as to quality and maybe value. My internet search yielded nothing.

    Another Forum Section?

It wouldn't be a bad idea, I have often struggled with where to post my building questions. Many of them are not flint or percussion specific. A "builders bench" forum would also attract people with pure build questions as well as being a nice archive of pure build questions.

    Effectiveness on Deer?

    GPR thimbles and hot bluing

I am not suggesting that browning isn't tough, I would just like a finish that is tougher than a cold process I paint on. If there were someone here locally that did a browning, I would likely have it done. In looking at the mountain man museum's virtual tour, some of the rifles sure look blued.

    GPR thimbles and hot bluing

Were no Hawken type flintlock rifles blued in the 1800s? One of my primary concerns is getting a durable finish, and I am positive that getting a good hot blue finish will fill that bill.

    GPR thimbles and hot bluing

I was talking with a local shop that blues parts and we started discussing tank temperature, since the thimbles are soldered to the rib on these rifles. The Lyman users guide states that most hot browning is 212-260 degrees and should present no problem if the person is careful. The person...

    TIPS ON BENDING A HAMMER

Maybe I missed a point here, but if the weapon was bought from a dealer and is under 1 year old, why not return it to Lyman? From my perspective, the inletting on the lock has it positioned too far to the rear. I am sure Lyman would correct it.

    Lyman GPR Kit Help

Update: I received the new kit today. Generally it is better than the first. I will work with it and get it together. I am still not completely happy with the touch hole location, though it is improved. It is still a bit back of the center of the pan. The gap around the tang is correct...

    Lock trouble

Another good lube is tetra oil (available in the firearm section at Wal-Mart. Ballistol has some big fans as well, I intend on buying a bottle this week. When you removed the lock, did you disassemble it? I suspect you have something in there that will require disasembly to root out and resolve.
