    What Made You Choose Flintlock?

I blame Fess Parker and Walt Disney...back in 1955 the Davy Crockett series was a hit many younger folks just can't imagine. In the early 60's it was rebroadcast in color to almost as rave reviews. By then the story was going round that 'Old Betsy' was electrically fired since flintlocks never...

    Curious Matchlock

Finding stuff in old guns can be an experience. Usually damage it too badly to save but once bought an old M.1809/39 percussion Potsdam musket. When I disassembled it the first time there was a folded 1898 stamp under the side plate. Never figured out why since it wasn't needed to stabilize it...

    1860 Pietta Army Too Tight?

Some whiz-bang in ordnance decided troopers sidearms needed to be sighted in for 75 yards and copies follow suit. In a cavalry melee it was just point where he's biggest and rip one off!

    Vertical ambush

Just remember that when you're vertically ambushing, there's other critters up them trees! For the younger posters who probably never heard of him...Jerry Clower and the 'Coon Hunt'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AX9QoFhEhI&feature=share

    Mowrey kits

Here's a 1975 Mowrey Arms guns ad from Interarms that was in a period gun magazine. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/mFQAAOSwqVBZZa-U/s-l1600.jpg

    Mowrey kits

M.L. Mowrey started makeing these at his home in the late 60's....Mowrey Gun Works started them in 1994 and was located in Olney, Texas, with production facility in Saginaw, Texas, then to Iowa Park, Texas, till they moved to Waldron, Indiana in 2001 I believe. Believe they actually stopped...

    kentucky rifle

From now what you say is true but some of us older farts remember some real 'bottom of the barrel' stuff that came in even prior to CVA's start up...which is to say, manure varies! What makes me smile is how CVA's production ran through periods of better and worse. The older Kentuckys with...

"Ketland & Co." & "UNITED STATES" marked musket

Could see it with the wedding ring in the first pic but this close up is even better. Am I ever jealous. That's a beauty. Just adjusting and setting that rib in is enough to give me a headache! Thanks again...that's an amazing piece.

"Ketland & Co." & "UNITED STATES" marked musket

Don't think I've seen a double flinter with octagon-to-round barrels before. Those old Ketland boys were pretty talented builders!

    Loading question

Better a whanger than a wanker! Can't say I abuse the load but lift the ramrod about an inch or so and let it drop. A slight 'dink' and bounce says it's seated down...a soft 'thud' and no bounce says it's not. Better not go deep into a gun talking to me or I'll get some R&R in the State...

    TC patriot 45 Good/Bad?

Since you've got a history with your own pistols and if you can do really well with them, I'd say stay with what you've got. There's always the option of changing rear sights to something adjustable that mimics, at least, original sights. Unless you intend to compete at various ranges I'd say...

    Hawken vs Long Rifle

I've never heard of or seen a two piece barrel...that's certainly novel. Can't say it'd inspire me with confidence. Those odd looking things did win their share of matches against some really nice originals and copies of originals...broke a few rich guy's hearts! you know what the say, "Beauty...

    Building a matchlock.

Believe you may be thinking of Magnus Wiberg who is or was building matchlock muskets and snap lock rifles of Swedish patterns. His old site www.musketandrifle.nu/ only leads to modern weapons pics now. Perhaps someone else knows if he's still making copies of some nice guns.

    Something completely different

Salt water brine for 12 hours helps with meat toughness with fox. Additionally, adding lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to it will add additional tenderness to the meat. Cooked greens seem to blend well with fox. Stews with lots of mushrooms and other spices is good as well. Here's a printed...
