TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

Clamped, marked, drilled (5) 5/64” holes. Pin holes as you drill so they remain aligned. Note: Anneal the frizzen first to soften it so you can drill it. Center punched and drilled holes in the flat frizzen face first. Then used them as guides to drill through the sole. Countersink all holes...

TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

So in thinking the frizzen was no good, after tempering, lightly grinding off the surface layer, changing flints, changing flint angle, insuring the geometry was ok, balancing the main to frizzen springs, etc, etc, etc, I committed to learning how to re-sole a frizzen. Figured I can’t make it...

TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

I soldered on the brass front sight I made. I was able to clock the barrel tang screw slot so it lines up with the front sight. I now have a rear sight reference even though it’s slightly below the plane of the barrel. Maybe now I can make those 50yd, 12” gong shots, LOL! 😂

TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

Basic polish and stone the tumbler, sear, surfaces lightly. etc. Also the main spring was ridiculously overpowered, so I reduced the main and frizzen spring. I believe the main is now 12-15lbs and the frizzen is 4-5lbs. So the downside is it doesn’t spark well at all. The frizzen is extremely...

TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

Here’s the website from TOW. They had the complete kit for $199, then quickly ran out of stock. Then offered this kit less the stock and have since run out of those. https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/608/1/PISTOL-1780-ESS-K1

Ended up finishing with Tru Oil rubbed back and a couple coats black wax. Really brought out the reddish undertone.

I also made this front sight out of some brass stock but these originally were without them since combat was so close aboard ship. I do like it and this pistol is far from original so I may just braze it on anyway? Still undecided.

A good oil lamp for lots of soot for finishing the inlets.

TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

Because the inlets were initially cut and the lock, barrel tang and lock plate holes were drilled, ALOT of time was spent measuring, aligning and marking for the optimal layout. Here you can see the transfer mark just above the pre drilled hole in the lock, the drill jig proved invaluable...

TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

Had to make a new side plate because the original was missing from the kit but TOW sent out some brass stock for free. They were great to deal with! Just made a tracing of the pre inlet.

TOW English Sea Service Kit Build

I was originally holding out for a MBS English Dragoon in .62 for my next build but at $700’ish it was a little cost prohibitive. So when I came across this TOW Sea Service kit for $199 including the lock and barrel I could not resist! I’m sure the MBS is a far nicer kit but $199 was a steal...

My first kit build, traditions Kentucky pistol!

Congrats on completing your build! Nothing as satisfying as building it yourself, well other than shooting it of course!!!

I drilled the holes with a 1/16” drill bit in my press. Much easier!
