Pictures of my recieved bess carbine.

Did it happen to come with a choice between that side plate and the Bess 2nd Model sideplate? I ask as Dixie Gun Works offers a kit and you get both the trade gun sideplate like yours, and this sideplate: LD

Is this a Beaumont-Adams or a Deane and Adams Revolver? And a few other questions

OK Guys so HOW does one load this? A separate device and then the cylinder is returned to the revolver? LD

    Polygonal Rifling

It's been pretty well established that patched round ball does not obturate larger in the bore when fired. It has to do with the round surface of the sphere where the expanding gasses apply pressure. LD

    Hickock 45 Dry Balls It

Just TAKE EVERYTHING from Hickock45 with a LARGE grain of salt when it comes to black powder ESPECIALLY when he posts about flintlocks. Granted it was 15 years ago, but this video of his is still up shooting a Pedersoli Bess Carbine. He first shoots with an open can of powder, albeit with a...

Am I the only one who doesn’t really care for carving on a rifle stock?

Agreed! Unfortunately, I've seen too many "carved" stocks on rifles for sale for a pretty penny where the lock wasn't inlet in a correct manner because in my opinion the builder was in a hurry to get to the carving and rushed the basics. I've also seen carving that appeared to be in my opinion...

Mango Wood For Pistol, Rifle, or Musket Stocks?

So what I would do is remove the bark from the tree pieces, and PAINT the ends of the pieces with oil based paint. I was taught that when self drying harvested wood, that to prevent cracks from forming lengthwise due to drying, one paints the ends of the log(s) with oil based paint, or latex if...

    Ducks Unlimited Thompson Center

Hello, and welcome. Sorry to write, that such a commemorative marking on the rifle doesn't add to its resale value. The rifle appears as a Thompson Center New Englander. The value on that from what may be seen from the single photo, depending on external rust and bore condition, will be from...

Who among us are PIPE smokers?

Who among us are PIPE smokers?

Not sure how the op's thread beginning about which members of this forum are pipe smokers invited opinions about the act of smoking a pipe? AND since pipe smokers do not take the smoke into their lungs as a cigarette smoker does, I will leave this comment be.... LD

An introduction to Flintlock guns, advice needed.

So just understand that ALL flintlocks have a quirk or two. Something odd in the way that they reliably function. No two are quite alike, even if they have sequential serial numbers from a factory, or were made together by a builder. When it arrives and you try it out, I'm sure the numerous...

What is my new dog lock musket, or doglock musket, supposed to be? And who made it?

I'm thinking it's Rifle Shoppe parts as the lock is most definitely NOT India made, and the barrel was made by Ed Rayl. LD

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

This is a good point, BUT nobody has showed evidence the reason for the spare cylinder was, and only was, a "quick reload". The problem with this is "damaged" from what? How? So you don't get the revolver repaired OR it was so badly damaged that it cannot be BUT the cylinder survived...
