    A different breech plug.

A week in a good penetrating oil wouldn’t need too much. Drain and heat barrel. Then with a properly ground screwdriver, preferably cinched up in either a brace or drill press, give it all you’ve got. I’d twist it both ways, back and forth, to help break it loose. Probably a metric thread. Good...

Standard thread size for ramrods and attachments.......

Years ago the standard was 8-32 and even my .50 machine gun cleaning rod is taped for that size. But the factories turning out thousands of guns chose 10-32 so looks like that is now “standard”. Everything I have is the older size.

SOLD Ozark Mtn. Arms 54 Cal Rifle

Shipping is easy enough. Just be sure to remove barrel. It has a hooked breech so tang does not have to come off. I also have the same rifle in .54 and it has taken more than its share of mule deer. Excellent quality and a steal at your asking price! And it is about as close a copy of a late...

BEWARE OF FEDEX AND COLLECTING TEXAS.

I was interested in a Parker shotgun advertised by Collecting Texas a couple years ago. Via email I asked about half dozen questions and their response was for me to look elsewhere cause they didn’t have enough time to answer them. I was gone like a rocket!

    1/4 scale Napoleon

Incredible workmanship. I appreciate every aspect of the work but the wheels really drew my attention. Looks as though you steam bent the felloes rather than sawEd wood cross grain and the hub and dished spokes are outstanding. Perfect!

    Shortening a Flint

The best way to shorten a flint is to do it at home. Using Vicegrips clamp the flint and leather padding with the back side sticking out. Cinch the vicegrip in your vice and then take a worn out punch and with a small hammer lightly tap a small piece of the rear end. It’ll pop off, and move a...

Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

The Hawken rifle as we know it is not a true fur trade gun. It came along well after the 1820-1835 time frame, which was the peak time for the fur trade. I have always called it a ”pioneering rifle” and did serve well as the west was opened up. First, the percussion gun was not practical when...

Wet BP Can it be used?

DO NOT TRY THIS! But old timers who had been on a hunt in wet conditions would often heat a skillet and set it off the fire and pour a thin layer of powder from the horn or flask into the skillet and the retained heat would dry it out.

    Mowrey Rifle

Here’s some photos of the original. The barrel is 34 1/2” and tapers slightly from 1” at the breech to .950 at muzzle. Caliber is around .45. Notice the square headed nail someone used to strengthen the main spring. Also note there is no half **** On the sear. In the late 50’s I shot an awful...

    Mowrey Rifle

I posted this earlier on April1,2022 and thought you might enjoy the earlier story again. I own the original Allen & Thurber rifle that Bill Mowrey used to copy for his “Mowrey” rifle. i had dropped it off at his gun shop in Jacksboro, Texas In early 1964. It had (and still has) a broken sear...

    Greetings from New Mexico

Welcome. I’m at our summer home in Angel Fire about 1 1/2 hours southwest of Raton. Shoot a lot of clays with vintage breechloading side by sides at Whittington.

    Enfield vs Springfield

I own a PH.451 Enfield Volunteer I use as a backup to my flintlocks in case of weather or terrain I’m hunting. I’m used to shooting a lot of drop in my stock and the Enfoeld is a real pain to get down on. I once sent the gun to a great gunsmith and he attempted to heat and bend the stock down...

    Imported Guns Are Junk

That would be Ann Patrick, who continued the business after her husband, Edward, died. Eadward and his father, Jeremiah, were very active in the flintlock period. In 1833 she sold the business to Thomas Williams & Samuel Powell who produced very high quality arms. In 1905 Williams & Powell sold...

    Most Prevalent Calibers?

Probably because it’s such a gentle caliber to shoot and it uses much less powder. And it’s capable to kill deer quite well if hit properly. I just prefer a .50 or larger for deer.

    Most Prevalent Calibers?

I have shot lots of deer and elk with my flinters. A .50 roundball is fine for all deer and plinking but I’m more comfortable with a .54 or .58 for elk. And near bear i‘d definitely choose the larger calibers. Most popular calibers? I sell the muzzle coning tools ( MUZZLE CONING TOOL ) and by...
