    Real Hawken or not?

Mulebrain, I agree with you. I also now think the patent breech was replaced. Where is that solder fill you mention?

    Real Hawken or not?

Oops on my comment about the drum and nipple. I built a copy of a St. Louis Squirrel rifle in 2006, from photos of it for sale on Gunbroker (?). It was a drum and nipple.

    Real Hawken or not?

I have seen and studied closely more than 50 original Hawkens, including the Bridger Hawken in my avatar at left. I believe this is an original Sam Hawken "St Louis squirrel rifle", made for the local trade. I believe it is as made and has not been cut down. It has some unusual features for a...

    Halfstock, Flintlock Hawkens??

Notchy Bob, Tom Dawson made an exact copy of the Parkman rifle. Put Parkman Hawken rifle in your browser and photos of it come up. Click on one photo, then the source (americanlongifles.org) comes up. Click on that. Post was August 26, 2018. Bob Roller commented that he made parts for the...

Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

Thanks, Notchy Bob. I handled, measured and photographed that rifle and did not notice the tang bolt. I think I was on sensory overload.

Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

Notchy Bob, that is sure close to a Hawken, thanks. It is interesting that the tang bolt comes into the trigger loop rather than ahead of it, as it does in Hawkens.

I have tested the booster charge idea. It made no difference. Larry and I tested OE 1F some more. He used a .58 fullstock flint Hawken I built. We used his Pact chronograph. He...

Plains Rifle Takes its First Deer

Tl\izzy, you did very well. Ain't no flies on that rifle! I seem to remember a Sante Fe Hawken with a 15 1/2 inch trigger reach. Was yours that big?

Random photos of famous ML percussion/flint guns, or rather guns owned by either famous people or during famous events

Notchy Bob, that is a great link to the Jim Bridger Hawken They show two Hawkens, the second one is in Kalispell. I was there a few years ago and did not know about this rifle. It is a lot different from other Hawkens. Thanks!

Random photos of famous ML percussion/flint guns, or rather guns owned by either famous people or during famous events

That photo david-58 posted of the Beckwourth rifle was taken in Jefff Hengesbaugh's office. And anent (I've been waiting to use that word) the Liver-Eating Johnson Hawken, I handled, measured and photographed it at the Cody Museum in December 2018. The barrel is 1.3 inches wide at the snail...

Has anyone used 1F in a rifle ?

I shot 100 grains of Olde Eynsford 1F in my first copy of the Bridger Hawken. .530 balls were too hard to load, so I used .520 Hornady balls, which gave velocities close to .530 balls in past tests. Even then, I had to use .015 linen that crushed to .010. I had not fired this rifle since...
