Heavy duty way to place barrel keys in.

That has a very good chance of splitting the stock when shooting it. Especially in different temps.....hot of summer....cold of winter. On my wedge key rifles you can push them in and out with your thumb. Nice and snug, but no hammer required.

Starting my winter pistol build early

Today I decided to make my Trigger Plate (TP) for the pistol. I cut some metal, cut the trigger slot, then silver soldered two lugs that will be the trigger pivot point. I left the lugs high so I could fit it once the lock and TP are inletted.

    WANTED RamRod Puller

Seems like if you had an old T\C trigger guard laying around.....a cut here, a drill hole there.....and a few files.......

Do you display your flintlock or other guns in your home

That's so true!! I have picked up two rifles that had names and SS#'s on them. One was a Winchester 62A, built in 1947. The owner actually peened his SS# on both the upper tang and lower tang!! The rifle was not cared for very well (but it's a great shooter for 22LR) and had turned all patina...

    Leman Trade Rifle—what cartridge?

https://americansocietyofarmscollectors.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/1984-B51-Henry-E-Leman-Riflemaker.pdf Here's an interesting read on Henry Leman

    Coil spring vs leaf spring?

I agree with the "cheaper to make a lock with a coil spring". When you look at those locks, there is only one screw that holds them on the rifle. That screw is placed in the center of the lock-plate. There's a threaded bolster in the center of the lock-late that won't allow the use of a flat...

Can you guys school me on grades of Hawkens? Quality, value, etc.

I'm with you on the shiny brass thing. I prefer steel being browned or dulled down with a solution. Here's my much redone T\C Hawken. GM barrel, "real" hawken triggers and TG. I just got tired of the standard T\C look as well as the shallow grove barrel. I used a darkening solution on all the...

    Time machine Hawken

I've never in my life seen such an outstanding patchbox such as that.

Starting my winter pistol build early

Or...just prepping for the days of January\February 2025 when the weather is lousy. I started out with a block of Maple. Sawed the rough shape of the pistol I have a 13" .45 Cal barrel that will be used. Going to pattern it after the Chambers American Flintlock Pistol. I got the barrel channel...

    Kibler Carved Woodsrunner Wood Choice?

Those are some darn pretty rifles!!

Can you guys school me on grades of Hawkens? Quality, value, etc.

I think the occasional rifle maker puts out (unknowingly) a "dud". I bought a T\C Hawken kit rifle in the late 70's. My buddies had CVA's (IIRC). That Hawken of mine just never consistently shot near POA. I tried every size ball, patch, lube but just could not get it to group consistently. I...

    Flintlock pistol holster

    Very nice!!

    You call that a rifle.

So....what's that take for a load? Like a pound of FF for each shot?

    English lock build

Yes....what he said. Cutting the "wrong" direction and using dull tools will get you in trouble quickly. (I don't know how this Kibler guy seems to have all the answers. He must have built a few in his time ;) )

Rust removing & refurbishing a lock

If you sand the metal you will remove the bluing. But if it's that rusty, you may want to do it anyway. But, what I have used in the past on some very, very rusty blued firearm metals is Kroil Oil. Soak it down with Kroil and let it sit for 24 hours. Put a few coats on it and make sure they are...

    English lock build

I've never worked with cherry so that may be the reason I'm looking at what appears to be tears more than cuts. Are your tools razor sharp and are you re-sharpening (touching up) the edges after every 5 or so cuts?

    Tuning, reshaping flintlock lock

I'm the first to admit that anything with using "fire" I am usually bad at. But, having the right flux, silver solder, and clamp (tools) go a long way in making a job easy. This was easy.

    What's this hammer?

    Maybe this "Davis Contract Lock"?

    Tuning, reshaping flintlock lock

I picked up this decent (apparently no long made) Dixie Gun Works flintlock lock for a fair price. It's for a pistol build and is the right size of 4-3/4" long. The same\similar size to a L&R Manton lock that I have on a scaled down (kid\small frame person) 45-Cal flintlock rifle. So, the lock...
