    Sear Material

Could you send a photo of the sear you want to replace? How do you intend to shape it? If you have to heat bend or forge in any way, 01 has a tendency to air harden a bit after being heated to red, possibly making things slightly tougher to shape and it will also be somewhat brittle until it is...

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

Sorry, I don't believe it. If what you say is true, I do not believe Crazy Crow was your source.

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

NO, they are not. The heads are solid brass. The shanks are steel. I have used hundreds of CC's brass tacks over the years. If a magnet pulls to them, it is pulling to the steel shanks.

    Sear Material

More specific? I would say so. Lead and linotype would be as apples to oranges, just the same color. The linotype should give satisfactory results and although I gave you the specs for the best, the linotype would be the simplest for you not having an HT oven. I would caution you on relying on...

1851 trigger and bolt spring compatibility question

A spring for that can be formed from music wire and will likely never break.

    Sear Material

Lead melts at, give or take a tad, 620°F. That is much higher than ideal for the wear resistance 01 was formulated to give. That temper would make it stronger but at the cost of wasting some of the wear resistance 01 offers. 01 was created for use in industries requiring wear resistant strong...

    Brass Tacks on Knife Sheaths?

Brass tacks from Walmart and Dollar stores are brass plated, but most vendors of rendezvous and period items sell solid brass heads with steel shanks, Crazy Crow being a good source for them. Just a few years back, maybe 20 or so the solid early tacks were still available from England, although...

    Sear Material

What do you mean by re-build? If you are going to make a replacement use a high carbon steel. I would suggest 1080, 1084. Either have plenty of carbon and either heat treat easily. You could use low carbon if you can case harden it.

    Trigger &metal ?

Use your vise as a heat sink and heat bend the finger contact as you want. The vise will not allow enough heat to affect the main blade. If your vise jaws have heavy serrations you might want to sandwich the blade portion in some smooth metal when you vise it.

    Philadelphia derringer trigger pull

Thin the width of the sear spring, and some of the thickness when possible, then look into other possibles if needed. Sear springs are almost always way over powered. The power need be only enough to make a positive safe return of the sear. Any more is not necessary nor desirable as a heavier...

    Cheek Rest

The vast majority of long rifles have a cheek piece. Some are only little more than the stock itself, but others can be 1/2" or more. Much more than 1/2" I would say would be unusual.

To bend your barrel or not that is the question?

The bending is not a radical bend, it is really very slight but can make a difference in the point of impact. The bending in a smooth bore is sometimes necessary if you want the ball or shot load to be at POA. I have straightened both smoothies and rifle barrels using wood blocks, a heavy work...

To bend your barrel or not that is the question?

On a clean barrel, pull the breech plug and look down the bore. If bore is straight, in good light, you will see perfectly round ring reflections all down the bore. If you have a bend, you will see where it is because the round reflections will have become oval where it is bent. Bend it back to...

Could something like this be from 18th century?

Not all of mine are correct either. New knowledge often comes along with time, and exceptions to the norm do occur. And sometimes many knifemakers do "coulda beens" just because they may look cool and may please a customer. That includes gun makers also. Clipped points have been found on Roman...

    Eye-Glass Case

I would suggest a hard case. Metal or wood.

Does lead really wear out rifling by it's passage?

Flowing water alone does not smooth rock unless the rock is of a soft nature and even then the water is merely dissolving the natural cement bonding the rocks particles together. Sand, silicon, and other impurities in flowing water is what wears hard rock, but over a very long time. Metals...

    Silver solder questions

For high strength, Brownell's Silvaloy 355. 56% silver. Can be used with propane with a Mapp gas torch head. Requires a borax flux. Flows around 1250°F. Next down is Brownell's high temp Force 44.

    Regarding Carrying Tomahawks

I have never found any reason to split the sternum or pelvis on a deer. Chopping bone on a carcass usually produces chips where you don't want them to be.
