flintlock ignition trouble what do you think please help.

I make my liners out of 5/16 1/4x28 stainless set screws. Allen wrench socket drilled through 1/16" and coned on the inside to create a venturi and shorten the flame path. Very few misfires.

    Touch hole gas escape

A good proof of pressure loss is when you attempt to push a stuck ball out by dribbling a bit of powder down the flash hole. How much does the ball move if it was seated to the bottom of the barrel? I have found that I usually have to flash off a couple of little trickle loads to get the ball...

TC Renegade bad breech plug: fixable? Advice requested.

I always wondered if that would work out.

    Almost black stock

Yup. I used India ink. Worked well. It was a kit rescue and had a lot of patches, and the owner asked for black. I asked how black? He said Black black. I think it looked rather nice. Definately different.

    I.D help wanted.

Mystery solved folks! The owner scored an old book about Remington fireaems, and lo and bhold, a perfect match for his rifle is shown. (minus the fancy silverware) It is a Remington match rifle ca. 1850. He will definately be doing some restoration work on it. Anybody know if it is a ball or...

    TC Cherokee Hammer help

Just looking at your pictures, the angle of the face seems a bit off. I think it should be on the radius from the pivot point. That looks a bit 'open'. Use a jeweller's file, then polish the face with something like an Arkansas stone. I don't think it needs any more depth. If you want, I...

    I.D help wanted.

Got a much better look at the gun today. Borescope shows evidence of rifling about 4" down the bore, so possibly coned. The owner is going to clean it up inside, and we will get a much better idea of things then. May have indeed been a slug gun as someone suggested.

Making a front sight shade for my Hawken

Sometimes JB Weld is your friend. I made a shade out of thin walled steel tubing. I ct a 1" length of it down one side from top to bottom with a very fine saw. A bit of pressure to slip it down the sight blade, where it was held by the spring pressure of the tube. On and off easily for times...

Anyone fretting/thinking about building their own muzzleloader?

The main thing is to take your time. Don't get feelin 'I gotta get that finished'. People screw things up when they get rushed and don't take the time needed to think things through. I have bailed a few folks out by finishing 'kit' guns that they started and messed up; the job isn't easier if...

    TC Cherokee Hammer help

I would be tempted to VERY gently take a file to the full **** notch, deepening it at the top only so the toe of the tumbler can get a couple of microns deeper in.

Original triggers long gone, but there is a fly in the tumbler so...? I'll try to get some pics, and I'll see if I can get my bore scope down there. The owner is curious as well.

    Jaegers?

I built mine with parts from Pecatonica. Spend the $$ and get a swamped barrel; it makes a huge difference when you haul it around for a day.

    Roundball accuracy

See my recent post.(I.D. help wanted) Maybe somebody was working on that a long time ago.

    I.D help wanted.

A friend aquired a very heavy-barrelled .40 smoothbore. The barrel is 28", Octogon to round, about 1 1/8 diameter. Fancy walnut(?) halfstock with finely engraved silver hardware, stamped 'Remington' at the breech end below the Drum. It may be a flint conversion. I suspect that it was/is a...

Possibles Bag and Powder Horn Proper Carry Position?

Surely personal preference governed by convenience and what you want to do while wearing said gear. I prefer a large belt bag which is worn on its own belt along with Knife and Hawk. Horn hung above that (rt. side).

Lubricated Wads Contaminating Black Powder or Substitute

I used a lube I made of beeswax+crisco melted together. You can vary the 'stiffness' for use in hot/cold climes; more crisco=softer lube. I used it over ball in my revolver and as a minie and bullet lube.

    Authentic Mountain Man Experience?

35 years working in the forests of British Columbia (never armed), I never had a problem with bears or moose. Came across a lot more black bear than moose. Don't know if I got close to griz; never saw one except on roads (they can run about 30mph; timber wolves can run faster), although there...

    Those T/C Small Bores

If your maxi mold takes a while, try shooting patched .38 pistol bullets. I shot .457 patched bullets from my Hawken once in a while, worked well for me, although the recoil (405gr bullet, 70gr FF) was a bit sobering.

    T/C Seneca 36 caliber

Stout or not, it gets the ball out there in a hurry, i.e.; it shoots a very flat trajectory, which I like. Zeroed at 50 yd., pretty much the same at 25 yd, a bit low at 100.
