    AF stain question

You are probably good, it really pops after finishing. First pic is after blushing, second after one coat of finish Like Eric said, test under barrel with finish.

It better to post pictures prior to finishing the rifle for input, that way you can tweak the areas that need work...

    Quick Shipment

I called Chambers last week as well about my Fowler that has been on order since late summer and Barbie had same information for me. It doesn't matter much to me now anyway as they are my winter projects, i have plenty to do when the weather is nice... Waiting on a high grade American Walnut...

    Spring Turkey

Nice work! As long as you load a magic BB in the load it doesn't matter the range. But don't use more than one, it's just a waste...

    Flintlock ID

Nice looking rifle! Good luck finding black powder from anywhere but the internet. Cabelas likely won't have it, they don't around here anyway. Black powder is classified differently than smokeless and it's a hefty permit and strict storage requirements so most don't bother with it. I get mine...

    Jim Chambers Rifle Kits

I do not remember what grade of wood they were, but I do know they gave me a good deal on them! I get high grades of wood to hide my lack of experience and knowledge as Dave was referring to. The only two flinters I've ever seen in person or at least up close are above. So at least I don't...

    Jim Chambers Rifle Kits

I have built two Chambers kits, which are the only two that I have built so cannot speak to others. I have been nothing but overwhelmed by the outstanding product that they put out and they have been nothing but superb to work with. It is not a weekend project as a Kibler, my first one which...

Second Finish On My First Flintlock

That's a toss up, I really like the blonde....

I want to move on and experience flintlocks. Any suggestions as to a starter flintlock?

I would have a hard time classifying Kibler's rifles as "run of the mill factory". In any event, most do not take 130 hours to assemble one of Jim's beautiful rifles.

    Getting back to my rifle...

A lot of sawdust and wood chips to be made there yet, but getting there.

I want to move on and experience flintlocks. Any suggestions as to a starter flintlock?

Yes, Jim Kibler's rifles. Can easily get it done in a weekend with a couple basic tools. Although there was a guy over on the Gun Builder's Bench that had something like 130 hours into one of them... For the life of me I cannot figure out how that could be.

    Finish?

Nothing. If you know wood, you know wood. Other than using ferric nitrate and heat on maple treat it as any other chunk of wood you finish. You probably know more about it than most.

Can't shoot lead balls all the time - what's better than paper wads?

Why on earth would anyone live in an area like that??? Or for that matter that you couldn't walk outside and shoot real projectiles...

    Finished Lancaster build

Where did you learn to carve? If that is your first time, bravo! I can't bring myself to do anything but the basic necessities on a rifle. Those panels are extremely wide, but the rest is excellent!

    Kibler kits

I use a 40 for squirrel and don't really see what the difference would be between 32, 36 or 40 for them. If you hit head or ribs your good, if you hit meat - bad and that goes for all of them. The 40 is a sweet, easy loading, well balanced caliber that shoots very accurately.

Kibler Southern Mountain rifle kit and supplies arrived. It's going to be a fun build.

You will have a beautiful, correctly architecturally made rifle when you are finished. Something that I kinda had to wing with my Chamber's kits. In a way I wish I would have gone your route for my first...

    Finishing a barrel

Sending it for hot blue will cost you about half of what you paid for the rifle. I would just cold blue it, looks more natural for a ML anyway than a hot blue. I prefer blue over brown, but that is individual choice. Cold blue is easier also - degrease, rub on, buff, repeat rub on, buff, etc...

Kibler Southern Mountain rifle kit and supplies arrived. It's going to be a fun build.

That is crazy how easy those Kibler kits go together! What you have done in a few hours I would have done in about 80 on a Chambers kit. Those CNC stock machines are amazing...

    aqua fortis choices

Staining and finishing are one of my favorite parts of building a gun. Watching the color change and figure pop after heating FN seems almost magical and then running your first coat of finish!!! Oh man, that's where it comes alive!

    Still waiting!

I'm in same boat as you, well different boat but same water.... I ordered an English Fowler from Chambers in early September, still waiting as well. Was going to be my winter project, but will likely be next years winter project. I have enough things to keep me busy in nice weather months.
