    First Build

They are called bull nose chisels I think. If I recall @rich pierce swears by them. I have just made a couple and so far so good. As the name suggests just a chisel with a rounded nose. Made mine by rocking a standard chisel across the stone. This site has some good stuff to...

    First Build

For what it is worth. I am building my first rifle. It is a Chambers kit. Yes there are many hours in it and many errors but they are mine as ate the lessons learned. Take a piece of advice. Look at your books. Look at @billraby on youtube then do it again. Look for others. They are there. Good...

Question Based on my Long Experience with Unmentionable SxS vs Total Inexperience with ML SxS

Absolutely! As you say it is more quality than quantity. @Britsmoothy and @Feltwad are among the masters of smoothbore (no offense to all the others out there) and their advice is usually spot on. One thing with blackpowder guns is there scalability. It is simple to use a 20g or a 28g load in a...

Matchlock arquebus barrel from 1861 smoothbored musket barrel/ questions.

Getting a horse to go with the Petronel? I am in Leeton now. Means I can access public forest so venison may be on the menu! And no bag limits or seasons. :) And Griffith Blackpowder club is nearby.

Haven't hunted with a matchlock yet but fully intend to sooner rather than later. Just moved to NSW and need to get my licence transferred etcetera.

I suspect that this boar's name is Rupert and when not pinching lunch, is laying on the lounge watching Peppa!

Finally Jug Choked the 7 bore

I cannot remember where I read it but recall reading that leather was the best. I do know they use milk bottle and tetra pack cardboard, with the foil and plastic, for wads in BPCR for a gas seal so there must be some use/benefit.

Finally Jug Choked the 7 bore

well I'll be Damned!!!! Think you may be on to something! Looks like an 80 yard turkey load. Curious. Where is the centre of the pattern?
  15. LawrenceA

Finally Jug Choked the 7 bore

Not necessarily. Traditionally Full choke is supposed to mean any further restrictions makes no difference to the pattern. If more choke tightens the pattern then it was not really Full choke to start with. Remember the old rhyme: Little powder lotsa lead shoots far kills dead. Lotsa powder...

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

I am glad the barrel is coming good. Pre lubed patches work OK most of the time but can basically expire as the lube or cloth breaks down. Personally I have only just started to experiment with all these fancy sounding concoctions and have used whatever I have had laying around. If you look at...

    Question on Shaping Trigger Guards

I use whatever. Currently find concrete nails work. Anneal, shape, harden, sharpen and go. An old hacksaw blade also works. Bought a 2mm hobby chisel off ebay which is copping a workout.

Finally Jug Choked the 7 bore

Currently I am using beeswax/olive oil patch lubes on wads. Have done no testing

    Question on Shaping Trigger Guards

I would suggest making a chisel the same width as the tg tenons or make the tenons no thinner than your chisel
