  1. Flintlock1640

    SOLD Unknown continental Europe musket

I bought this thinking it was a French model 1777 with an earlier lock but it's not that though they did copy a lot of the French features. The barrel has a Belgian ELG mark but their copies of French muskets typically have a rounded trigger guard end. The end of the barrel is a different color...
  2. Flintlock1640

SOLD Possibly Confederate used US musket

It has the easier style trigger guard so I believe it is one of the 1795 series but the lack of comb makes me think it's later, 1808? Sorry, I don't usually deal in US guns. What got my interest was the use of a modified Pottsdammagazin musket lock model 1740, probably in America from the...
  3. Flintlock1640

    Odd probably French musket

because as it is it shouldn't exist. I've never heard of a French musket that between models used parts from a previous one. I'm trying to see if anyone on here knows about any other transitional models like this so I know if this was built this way or was a period modification (for instance is...
  4. Flintlock1640

    Odd probably French musket

Now notice how the 1774 trigger guard is identical to the 1777 in the front but differs in that it is one piece, has no finger ridges, and ends in a point.
  5. Flintlock1640

    Odd probably French musket

Just to clarify a bit more I want you all to see how this musket started being built as a 1774 and was updated. Notice how the side plate on the 1774 is more S shaped. This is visible in the side plate mortice. You can see how it was changed.
  6. Flintlock1640

    Odd probably French musket

Of course they did. I have a Liege contract short land. The Belgian marks are very different then. I've seen later Belgian Besses with just the ELG for a late India Pattern. That doesn't explain why you'll occasionally come across a British make musket with British proofs but also later added...
  7. Flintlock1640

    Odd probably French musket

I suspect it was just to reconvert to flintlock from percussion. I don't really know it came to me that way.
  8. Flintlock1640

    Odd probably French musket

I will gladly believe it is if you can find any kind of proof that the Belgians ever made anything similar to this. Every Belgian copy I've seen has features dissimilar to the French musket. I agree about the Belgian ELG being a proof mark. When arms went to Belgium they were reprooved. It does...
  9. Flintlock1640

    Odd probably French musket

I bought this with the double barrel I sold thinking it was a 1777. Now I'm not so certain but it could be more interesting. The side plate, butt plate, stock and barrel band all look 1777. The trigger guard is similar but is one piece instead of two and has no finger ridges. Barrel has a pin...

OLD original barrels - what to build?

If you want to try something a little different, that octagon would be cool with my early Spanish/Roman style miquelet ca 1640s
  11. Flintlock1640

SOLD Antique double barrel percussion shotgun ca 1850s

I'm sorry I upset y'all with this good deal. I know I could have probably held out for a bit more but I bought this and another gun for $200 including shipping and I really bid on it for the other gun so I was pleased to be able to give someone else a good deal and get back half my money. :)
  12. Flintlock1640

SOLD Antique double barrel percussion shotgun ca 1850s

Nice wall hanger as it is with potential to be a good project for shooting. I believe it is 12 gauge but measuring it without a caliper I was right around .75 so it could be 10 gauge, but probably 12. I have no idea why the upper piece between the barrels (I knew the wood until I started writing...

    1728 French Lock?

Yours has been messed with so it is hard to say what it was originally. The lock is 1728. To the right of the side plate you can see where the sling swivel went through the side from the lock so without question this is either a 1717 with the wrong lock or the 1728. The 1717 did not have barrel...

    1728 French Lock?

It looks to me like a 1754 lock. The pan on those is deeper than on the 1728. These locks will have the maker's initials outside the Fleur de lis. I'm not familiar with those initials.

or depending on the amount of rust you may have nothing left lol

    Forensic Identification for Flintlock Remains

as far as a vinegar bath doesn't vinegar take off patina? I think the barrel looks great the way it is. Rough but showing it's 250+ year history.
