Problem with flash channel plugging up

If the gun has a hooked breech, remove the barrel and let the breech end soak for about 10 minutes in soapy water to soften any deposits in the entire flash channe,. Pump the water up and down the barrel with a tight patch. With the nipple in place, that will thourough pressure wash the nipple...

    How do you eat them

Being Canadian, I have little (or no) knowledge to add to this conversation, apart from wondering 'What the H--- are they?' Whatever, I agree that anything tastes better with butter and/or bacon.

    Rear sight on a smoothbore

Me too, I index the slot so it lines up with the front sight. It is below the plane of the top of the barrel so it doesn't count as a 'sight' It's just a way to get everything lined up more easily.

Smoke pouring from barrel after fired

I tried pyro for all of one can. Seemed fine in my rifle, but in my pistol the balls got out of the barrel before all of the powder burnt, resulting in a second or so while it cooked off after the shot. Maybe your friend is experiencing something similar; the ball is gone, but unburned powder...

    Safe Black Powder Storage?

Au contraire--when saying plastic is safer than the metal cans. A friend had his house burn down and 19 lbs of powder were on the floor of his gun room. Two cans burned off, probably because the solder melted out of the vertical seam, allowing flames to reach the powder. the other cans were...

    Smootbore round ball loads

Lots of smooth-bore arms going back centuries. They are NOT rifles. Smooth bore guns were often fitted with rear sights. Information from archaeologists' (The Missouri Archaeologist?) publication mentioned that a significant number of the trade guns found have rear sights. The Old Boys...

    Sight help on Kentucky rifle

Nothing wrong with those patches. I always shot 60 grFF, .495, .019 in my Hawken percussion 32"GM barrel. Muzzle velocity about 1300. I zeroed it for 50 yd. Pretty much the same hold at 25, and hit about 4" low at 100. Could be that your rifle doesn't have enough drop at the wrist, thereby...

    Is it LOADED?

Lots of know-nothings out there. They think all pwders that get shot in guns are gunpowder. They don't know (or care) about the difference until they blow them selves up.

    Touch hole position

You might consider sticking a countersink into the hole and giving the hole a bit of a funnel shape rather than the flat wall. I feel that the coned hole guides the flash in a bit better as well as it shortens the constricted channel into the chamber.

    Misfire

No way your patch was spitty enough to wet 40 gr. of powder. I slobber all over my patches when I detect a bit of fouling just above the charge on the previous shot; never had any kind of effect on my load that I could detect. Unless you have a patented breech, you shouldn't be able to get...

Does black powder really cause rust ? I havent seen it

The only time I have had rust in a barrel was when I first started many years ago, and I rinsed with almost-boiling water, dry swabbed, then waited until next day to oil the bore. Came up with orange patches when I swabbed the dry barrel before oiling every time.

Looking for a Decent Spotting Scope.

I have a BUSHMASTER 20-60. Got it at a gun show. Does the job. Get a good tripod or stand while you are at it; nothing more useless than a high mag scope that wiggles. I have used Bushnell scopes a lot in the past; also good for the $$ involved.

How is rear sight attached to this barrel?

Heat the sight body up to melt the solder, then get a Hawken sight, cut a dovetail, and you are back in business. The original set-up had screws (which are beneath the moving arm of the original sight, if you haven't found them yet).

Buckhorn rear site for TC Hawken

I got a "Hawken" buckhorn with the wedge elevation from TOW, figured out where it should be, and filed a dovetail for it. The original screw hole I filled with a short screw filed off flush with the top flat and touched with a dab of browning solution so it blended right in with my browned...

    Pulling a round ball

drill larger holes in plumbing (tap) washers for centering.

    Pulling a round ball

Make one of these. Thread the small end to match the threads on the nipple. They work most of the time. I made my ball screw (last ditch) out of a #14 wood screw. I cut off the head and threaded the shank to 10-32, then sharpened the point and threads so I could easily screw the puller...

Cause of My TC New Englander Misfires

I used patched 45-70 bullets a few times. They work pretty well that way, but the recoil is nasty with 70gr. or so in a hawken.

Lack of a tight seal on nipple threads a likely cause of misfires?

I think the pyrodex may be a big part of your problem. When I tried it in my CVA Kentucky, it lit up reliably (311cap), but didn't build enough pressure to give the ball any velocity, and I could hear the last of the powder cooking off in the barrel after each shot. You might try putting 5 gr...

    2F In A Flintlock Smoothbore

No problem with 2f priming. Potential problem with pyro anywhere near a flinter. I found that pyro didn't work well in my flinter. It requires a pretty hot ignition. Also, being essentially a smokeless powder with slow-burning character, it needs to build pressure exponentially to properly...

What to do when your farsightedness get`s worse..?

When I bagan to get problems seeing front sights clearly, I took a pistol mock-up to my optometrist and asked her for a right eye only (dominant eye) lens that gave me perfect focus on the front sight. It was a very small difference from the normal lens. I got a cheap pair of slightly...
