    What muzzle loader is this

I ran across an Indian made replica that looked exactly like yours. Is yours a shiny smooth bore?

    SOLD 1803 Harpers Ferry

Not a set trigger and not a Pedersoli Bess heavy trigger. Probably six pounds or so.

    SOLD 1803 Harpers Ferry

I’m thinning my herd for some new interests in BP cartridge guns. This is an 54 caliber 1803 Harpers ferry rifle built from a Rifle Shoppe kit that I’ve had for quite a few years. It is very nicely done and aged naturally. It sports a Davis HF lock and a Colerain round bottom groove barrel. It...

I need help with DIY wads

I just use these. Powder, two cards over powder and two over shot. Sometimes I will cheat and use plastic shot cups if I’m turkey hunting. My guns are not choked. 90% of the time cards only. You might be surprised that your choked gun will shoot fine with just the cards as components. 1000 cards...

    Bad ideas

There is nothing at all wrong with a traditions gun. I’ve had quite a few. The locks in flint aren’t great but they are serviceable. On the other hand there isn’t another production muzzleloading rifle made that is uglier than the two piece stock traditions Kentucky. Making it uglier shouldn’t...

    Touch hole liner

Welp this is going to start the 4f debate as a main charge again. Yes it’s fine to use but I wouldn’t if I had different size powder. Preferably 3F but 2F would work also. I use 4f all the time in BP revolvers.

    Touch hole liner

I always use RMC Allen wrench liners. They are pre-drilled with a 1/16th hole. Using 4f is fine as your primary charge and pan primer but 4f will still leak out of a 1/16 hole.

    Shooting Rest?

Grab a big bag of rice. Shove the whole bag in a pillow case and tie up the pillow case. Leave the rice in the plastic bag before you put it in there. If you’re fancy you can cut the pillow case and sew it up.

    Patch knife and lubing

I gave up on cutting at the muzzle a few years back. I just cut square patches from my strips with scissors. Either way is fine and I just use -0° windshield washer fluid in a squirt bottle for lube. Spritz the patch then load. I’ve found no difference in accuracy using pre cut patches vs...

    45 cal proof load

At 300 yards with a 45 roundball you’re gonna annoy the piss out of that deer. Might even leave a whelp if you double that 60grain powder charge. You might want to pull up a roundball velocity chart. At those distances there is like a 20 foot drop and less energy than a slingshot.

Thompson center percussion lock with safety

Pedersoli mortimer locks have those safeties. Mine has one.

    Round ball ?

If you’re wanting 50 yard accuracy go with a larger caliber. At least a 40 preferably a 45. I’ve had several 32 rifles. 25 yard accuracy can be one hole groups. I’ve never been able to get a decent 50 yard group with a 32. A simple slight breeze wreaks havoc on that tiny ball.

Lapping the Barrel with JB bore Paste

I’ve built three Great Plains kits in the last five years. One 50 cal and two 54 cal. Never not once did I have an issue with loading a 530 ball and an 18 patch. I use windshield washer fluid in a squirt bottle for lube or spit. All of them went down smooth as butter without wiping between...

Lapping the Barrel with JB bore Paste

What are you lubing your patch with? How thick is your patch. If it’s not cutting the patches then it’s fine. You need a wetter slicker lube or a thinner patch. Try your patch with some spit or use a thinner patch. Use that solvent your cleaning with as a patch lube.

    Gemmer Hawken advice

The investarm Gemmer Hawken is the same gun as the Lyman Great Plains. Same gun. Same maker. You’ll find many reviews and posts on this site by using the search feature and typing in Lyman Great Plains. I’ve owned several percussion Great Plains rifles. Great guns in my opinion. With a little...

Shooting Plastic Shotgun Wads in a smoothbore?

I use plastic cups all the time in my cylinder bore guns. Yes it does tighten the pattern in two of my doubles and my Bess carbine. I use a ball of TOW under the cup to keep it from leaving stringy plastic in the bore from melting. Powder, TOW, run the cup down on top of the TOW then dump the...
