    Custom Flintlocks

Interesting I will look into it! Another good line of muskets that I find pretty neat is the Potsdam muskets. They had some big bore offerings. Be something different than a Bess. Thanks

Thanks and yes you are dead on! Trying to figure out what works and what is possible to machine with my equipment!

    Bois d'arc stock?

Did you ever get around to building something with it? I have made numerous things out of it including solid bushing for rotating shafts! I want to build a gun stock out of it. Trick is to find some slow growth (in an old dry hedge row where the trees are batting each other for moisture)...

    Custom Flintlocks

I do stand corrected though. Extra barrel length does add a bit of extra velocity even with black powder. That being said after about 30 inches in length there is a bit of diminishing returns for more steel to swing around. On a ballistic calculator you gain about 100 FPS from 32" to 42"...

    Custom Flintlocks

Yeah the Hawken thing is way overdone and when I tried to learn what a "real" Hawken was my mind glazed over! That being said I actually really like the half stocked Jonathon Browning rifle that I have that I think is supposed to be a Hawken-like rifle. That is what drew me back to the Jaeger...

    Custom Flintlocks

And nothing against Kibler but those kits are so well fitted it's about like bolting together an AR-15! A side note on Jim Kibler. I started watching what he was up to on YouTube before I even knew I was into flintlocks. He had a video where he was making his own barrels and rifling them on a...

    Is Schuetzen 4f particularly nasty?

I have only one thing to compare schuetzen to and that is my own powder. My powder has softer fouling and shoots faster. I think mine smells better also! I have heard folks say that it is dirtier than swiss.

    Feeling like a Drugstore Cowboy

I make black powder because it smells better and is cheap. Flintlocks are awesome because caps are hard to find! Shoot what you can I guess! 😂

Could a round ball about .001 inch less than bore diameter be used?

I don't see why it would be that big of a deal. Powder, wool felt wad that fits bore tight, healthy load of grease and soft lead ball. Initially it might be tough to start, but once it forms to bore it will go right down like you are slugging a bore. Later loadings will be fine without...

I saw a test awhile back and have seen this documented elsewhere. Grease over the ball doesn't do a whole lot as most gets blasted off after the first chamber goes off.

That's a nice looking rifle. I bet .40 would be an all around pleasure to shoot! Coming from shooting a bunch of center-fire rifles I don't think shooting 50 balls are too bad either.

    Nice work!

    Custom Flintlocks

I guess I should have asked this question first. What is a really good lock and trigger? Thanks

    Bullet Mould Idea

I used fiber wads briefly and went to cork gasket material over the powder and then beeswax/fat grease under the ball. Works really well. One dry patch and barrel is shiny. Doesn't matter how long you shoot. That might change next summer! I will try the paper towel. I'm always worried...

    Custom Flintlocks

Has anyone just carried on with the early American way of taking what they liked from different rifle designs and just built their own? I mean most of these reproductions and kits aren't really that historically accurate anyway. Seems also there was a variance between gun makers and even...

    Bullet Mould Idea

I didn't take any comments as bashing my idea. I posted this to get more ideas and that is what is happening. I realize most everything has been done before especially when building things for 160+ year old revolvers! I just want an easier, faster, more consistent way to get grease behind a...

Referring to a Smoothbore as a Smoothie

With $200 caps might as well be loading centerfire! lol

    Bullet Mould Idea

Ok here is my more advanced idea. This will retain grease on and behind the bullet. still have to use a powder wad of some kind if left loaded or in hot weather (I have used cork gasket material with great success). This in theory is possible to machine with some specialized tooling and...

    Powder Valley Has Caps

I was hoping to find some locally, but haven't been able to find any yet. I am about out.
