    Got out at last

Brownbear, I'm with you on the need for an ocassional squirrel safari. I grew up in Iowa and I know a lot of what I do hunting bigger game is what I learned hunting squirrels. Paul

    Got out at last

Cinthialee, I hope you have something other then red squirrels where you are. They are pretty tiny & with their diet of pine cones, I'm not sure they would even taste good. They're all we have around here, but can't even shoot them as they are classified as furbearers. If you have the greys...

Fun with Nitric Acid (Staining Curly Maple)

When it came time to finish my latest build, it seemed that the only way for me to acquire AF was to be a school or be willing to set up an account & order $200 worth of the stuff. While running around on the internet, I found a site that listed a number of formulas (sorry, I can't find my way...

    Problems with T/C hawkens

As far as the cracked stock is concerned, I am not sure if this would apply to you, but after shooting some heavy conical loads through my GM 1:28 twist drop-in barrel,my stock cracked in the breech area. TC uses a screw rather then a through bolt to hold the tang, which reduces support for the...

    What finish on maple....

Yes it was! I was just getting ready to finish mine (maple) when it started up. I am now at the polymerized tung oil stage. Paul PS- It looks like walnut.

    Opening day of squirrel season..

I am really jealous. I grew up in Iowa, so I know all about squirrel hunting. There are a few greys around here ( mostly town squirrels), hardly worth hunting. There are lots of reds (pine squirrels), but they are classified as fur-bearers, so it's illegal to hunt them. They are really tiny...

    sale of smokepoles per year

Here in Canada, flintlocks were not included when the long gun registry was in effect. Anyone, whether or not they had a gun acqisition certificate could buy one with no questions asked. I recently met a gentleman who had a specific, occasional need for a rifle but didn't feel the need and...

Questions about a real St. Louis Hawken

Cliff, Welcome to building. IMHO, I think you have made a good choice by starting with a rebuild that you can make the way you want. Major parts are a lot cheaper & you don't get all bent out of shape if you screw up. Worse case scenario, you can always sell it to somebody as a shooter & get...

    Why, a patch knife...?

Try Googling 'scary sharp' & 'sharpening carving chisels'. You will probably find some techniques you can use. Edges that sharp can also be fragile, so use them carefully to protect them. Also, be careful. My wife usually manages to cut herself after I sharpen her kitchen knives. Paul

    Bending Brass Castings

The stock I am presently working on is a fantasy build with a thumbhole, giving it a semi-pistol grip. I know, I know, I would never try to call it any kind of a HC school, but it is a flinter and from the lock forward it has the 'look' of a HC rifle but again, does not match any classification...

    Bending Brass Castings

I recall posts sometime in the past re. the bending of brass castings. Trigger guard in this case. IIRC, there was some difference between sand cast & wax cast as far as bendability is concerned. Unfortunately, my computer skills were inadequate in the last hour to locate related posts in the...

    Patch question

I have been eyeing the linen tableclothes that my grandmother so lovingly did a beautiful job of embroidering. My wife swears at them every time she uses them because they're such a pain to iron out every crease and make them presentable. But, every time I offer to save her the labour and buy...

Questions about about building your own

You don't say what kind of woodworking you have done, but if you have done some carving or have built a fine chair, jump right in & don't look back. My first build was a TC Hawken re-stock. It helped to have the original stock right there for instant reference. That was before I even realized...

    Flintlock first blood

Boy, it's a good thing flintlocks aren't a new invention or the 'nannystate' would legislate them out of existance for 'safety reasons'. -"You could put your eye out with that." Paul I haven't figured out how to insert smilie faces, so insert what you feel appropriate.

    still problems areas

It may be that your scrapers are trying to cut too aggresively. After jointing the edge of the scraper with a file so it's square with the surfaces, use a stone or diamond hone to polish it up. Then be sure the sides are stoned or honed flat at the edge. This should leave you with 2 square &...

    Gun Stocker's Floats

In the latest issue, vol. 6, #5, of the LEE VALLEY on-line woodworking newsletter, there is a short article on gun-stockers floats. These are a specialized rasp for working in recesses or barrel channels. Not a lot of information, but of some interest. Wish I had a set. Paul

    Future builds?

Mine is the 3rd of a series of fantasy rifles. .58 Rice,TOW yeager style barrel, Chambers Late Ketland lock, Davis dbl. set trigger. Stock will be my own thumbhole fullstock design I'm still fine tuning, cut from a fancy maple plank from my lumber wholesaler's 'tickle trunk'. I have another of...
