Anyone got a deer or bear this year? Our season opens this weekend, wondering how folks round the country are doing.

Muzzleloader bear opens statewide in Pa October 16 and runs throught the 23. I hope to make it out.... Muzzleloader deer opens in Virginia October 29, and runs for 2 weeks. Turkey is concurrent the first week and bear the 2nd week, so a good time to be in the woods there.

    Lock question

From the new photos its obvious that the lock fence is not tight against the barrel. That may just be a function of the lock not being inletted deeply enough into the mortice, possibly just the mainspring causing the interference. With the lock tight against the barrel, powder cannot leak out...

    Lock question

I see a gap between the frizzen and pan, but it doesn't seem enough to bleed fffg. You say your FIL converted from presuction to flint. What I can't see is the lock side of the barrel. PLEASE tell me he installed a touch hole liner and didn't just cut the drum off!

    Maxi balls?

Conicals need a quicker rifling twist to stabilize. While they might seem simpler to load, they need more cleaning since they are a looser fit and no patch to lube and wipe the bore. Patched roundballs make life easier.

    Lock question

It sounds like a poor frizzen to pan fit. Side view pictures of the lock would be helpful. Sight unseen options would be: (1) welding and redrilling the frizzen pivot screw location for a tight fit (2) laying a bead of TIG weld around the pan and filing for a perfect fit (3) using JB Weld to...

    Mr. Flintlocks

I've used it at the range and found it similar to Lehigh Valley and Shenandoah Valley lubes. For hunting I use mink oil from TOW. I have no fears of the latter migrating into the powder charge or freezing.

    Update on .62 rifle charge

Mine only has 28-1/2" of heavily swamped barrel so weighs about 7-1/4#. 2" of buttplate and not much drop helps with felt recoil. My barrel is a Colerain, and I generally shoot a .605" wrapped in .018" pilow ticking. Swiss is a bit more energetic than Goex, so your powder charge is on par...

    1F in Muskets?

fg should be the proper powder for muskets and larger bore shotguns. You might need another 5-10gr over your ffg, but it'll be fine.

    62" Gun sock needed.

A vendor had blanket cases at the Eastern Lonrifle Show. They were made from wool blankets and could have matched your Capote.;)

    Ignition issue with Flint GPR

Your issue was more a disfunction of the patent breech than the touch hole liner. When you swabbed the bore, you pushed fouling into that smaller bore and prevented enough fresh powder to reach the flash channel. IMO, you were better to continue shooting the rifle without swabbing provided it...

    Curly Cherry!

I have some cherry here along with both red maple and sugar maple. There should be no mistaking cherry for maple. Five or more years ago I put cherry scales on a knife, and finished with BLO. It NEVER darkened outside the difference the oil made, and is sort of an orangish color. I have...

    Who made this powder

NOT made in NY!!! Apparently imported by the Canadian CIL firm and then distributed in the USA by CIL's Plattsburgh warehouse.

    Metal finish thought

"Dyed" traps are literally the same as rust blued barrels. Both are first rusted, and then boiled to cease the rusting. Traps get a coat of wax to further protect from future rust since they are buried or submerged.

    T/C New Englander

82gr ffg is roughly 3 drams, and I shot that and considerably more in my NE 12 bore, but always equal volumes of powder and shot. They are relatively light, and definitely handy!

    GOEX PLANT

IIRC, the Elephant pant was flooded back around 2000, and later the machinery was moved and produced Diamondback Blackpowder. As far as I know, Diamondback is also defunct. The PRE 25-99(?) lots of Elephant were grey, lots of variation in grain size, weak, and dirty. The later stuff was MUCH...
