    Kit building inlets

I've assembled 2 Chambers' Early Lancasters and the inlets for the 3 RR pipes were very sloppy.......overruns at each end of the 2 forward pipes and 1 end of the entry pipe bbl inlet. Outside of the above inlets, found very few serious errors. All in all....the 2 part sets were enjoyable...

Why do my countersinks look horrible

A very low spindle speed is mandatory and having the workpiece clamped securely is also req'd. Having been a tool and diemaker for a number of years, have never had a "chattered" ctsk. Of course a very sturdy drill press was used and an attached table vise was used. ....Fred

    Darkening brass

Cold blue is applied over the entire item , let dry and then selectively rub back w/ 0000 steel wool. The inside corners should be a lot darker simulating gunk accumulation. I don't over do the "aging"....it then looks "phony".....Fred

    Type of tap

TH liners come in all sorts of sizes seeing many are one of a kind...being hand crafted. So what's "non standard"? Previous to the WL, I made my own but the elliptical cone switched me over....Fred

    Type of tap

All sizes of White Lightnings have 32 TPI. I've found that the 1/4-32 WL is good for all the bbl sizes and that's what I have used. Bought {2} 1/4-32 taps from Chambers ...one has the point and some of the lead in threads ground off and the other is used as is to start the tapping. The...

    Epoxy bedding?

None of my builds saw the use of epoxy.....but have used super glue a couple of times to glue in a piece of maple. Both surfaces of what would be the "glue line" are first stained and then the super glue is applied and dissolves the stain and the repair is nearly invisible. The "what ifs" as...

    Relief carving tools

For some of my relief carving, an Exacto knife is used w/ the blade tip having a small radius....it seems the tips break off as purchased. It's used for outlining in lieu of a "V" chisel. Of course some have said my relief carving is different than most,.....Fred

To Cast-off or not to Cast-off ??? (Hawken rifle)

All my LRs have cast on or cast off but none of my Hawken builds have it....the stocks are kinda "skinny" compared to LRs. When cast is used, it's only 3/16". My bird gun is an 870 Rem. pump which really fits me well and it also has a "skinny" stock. Been around guns since 7 yrs old and have...

    Whiskering????

I use 220 grit paper.....later on in the finishing process after each of the 2 wipe on/wipe off coats w/ a soak in time of 10-15 mins of LMF sealer has dried, the 0000 steel wool is used. Then a different finish is twice applied w/ the fingers w/ a complete dry between coats. The final...

    Toeplate thoughts

Built 2 Hawkens and both had 1/8" thick toeplates which had a sling swivel riveted on. The toeplate was attached w/ 3 screws/ All my Bucks County LRs have a toeplate that pushes a rod that opens the Pbox lid.....Fred

    Maple

I finish w/ 220 grit including dewhiskering. My finishing process includes using 0000 steel wool which makes the stock very smooth.....Fred

    Looking for a Stock Blank

When I first started building LRs, bought 4 very curly blanks from Harrison at a big price, but thereafter bought medium to upper grade blanks in sugar and red maple which didn't have vivid curl but when stained had enough to make the stock interesting. ....in fact some of my Bucks County...

Advice about a crack in the stock ?

The only glue that I've used on stocks is a runny super glue. I first stain the crack, let dry and then apply the super glue which disolves the stain making the crack invisible when the final stain is applied. Caution....if the crack is wide, clamp closed..... Superglue doesn't like to...

How long before waxing a stock ?

I have never applied wax of any kind to a gunstock......a quality, properly applied finish shouldn't require wax. Besides, all my builds have a very low sheen.......Fred

Do I need any more tools for shaping a stock blank?

I built most of my LRs from blanks and a bandsaw is a must in my opinion. Sawing on the line of an accurate stock layout quickly removes a lot of wood. After bedding a few bbls and doing the RR work, I then sent that work out. Removing a lot of wood on the buttstock thickness is done w/ a...

    What's the best to use.

At first thought a front blade that's .100 thick might not be accurate, but looking at it down a 42"-46" bbl makes it look thinner. The pic shows it on my squirrel rifle.....Fred

    What's the best to use.

I make both sights because it's very enjoyable and my sights are very sturdy. The front sight blade is made from .100 thick steel w/ a sterling silver insert soldered in. The face of the insert is angled for better light gathering. Both sights are browned. Shown below is a front sight. .....Fred

How to get dull finish browning a barrel ?

The patches I use aren't that wet and approx half way down the bbl, the patch gets some more LMF. W/ subsequent coats, the half way stop points are varied.....the stop points are not evident when the bbl browning is completed. The LMF is very forgiving.....Fred

    Entry pipe inletting ???

I don't have the RR in the pipes when drilling for the pins....might prevent the pipes from hitting the bottom of their inlets. and then being loose after pinning. My RR pipes are shown below and after forming, are soldered using high temp {1250 degrees melt and borax as a flux} 1/16 dia...
