    Yearly powder usage

    I will go through about 20 pounds a year. With my cannons, when blank firing i use 50/50 black powder non dairy creamer. Live fire i have to use all powder. My small arms use up about 5 to 6 pounds. As for grouping good luck with a smooth bore cannon at 100 yards. And my mortar a good group...

    They are all live firing, range up to one mile on the cannons and up to a 1/2 mile on the mortar. I have two events here in Minnesota where we do live fire demos. :)

    I use non dairy creamer for my blank charges, 1oz powder 1oz creamer, nice flash as for left over residue about the same as any other time.

    True, cast iron is brittle, may be they used WROUGHT IRON. But as steel was also known by then they may have used a alloy of some sort.

    My mortar is 24 pound 5.8in bore coehorn, made out of bronze,on a wooden base. range appox 1/2 mile with 8 ounces 1F powder or appox 100yards per ounce of 1F. Just be sure to use black powder, pyrodex does not work :redface:.

    New to flintlocks - Advice welcome

    I hope to get my Traditions.50 out when it warms up agin, gets cold in Minnesota. I just have to harden the frizzen, i have test fired it using a match. I am use to the powder flash as i have shot match locks.

    Miniature cannon idea

    My 1.25 naval cannon will shoot a 6 once lead ball about one mile, and that is with a wad. I use fuse on mine. When I can figure out how to post photos I will, have tried but know luck. :confused:

    Barrel finish

    I think that I will leave the barrel for now as I need it in 2 weeks. Will cold blue it later and let it brown by it self, as with my .50 CVA hawking, I like the way it looks now just remember to give it a good rub down with oil once a year.

    cannon load

    I use 2f or 3f in my 1.25inch bore cannon, max load 2oz. For live fire I use 1.75oz, makes a big bag. You should not need more that 2oz of powder. Have not tried 1f yet but do have a pound of it, and will try it soon. There is appox 438 grains to a ounce
