Friends, our 2nd Amendment rights are always under attack and the NRA has been a constant for decades in helping fight that fight.
We have partnered with the NRA to offer you a discount on membership and Muzzleloading Forum gets a small percentage too of each membership, so you are supporting both the NRA and us.
I appreciate your instructions for one way of cutting a barrel channel. However, I really was looking for help for a swamped barrel.
Usually, when cutting a barrel channel, I use a router table instead of a table saw. I remove most of the wood with a 'hogging' bit. It's a 1/2" dia, solid...
I haven't yet figured out how to post direct links, so you'll have to do a little searching these threads.

IIRC from my university trade classes, linotype alloy (lead) has very little shrink, maintaining crisp faces on the type. I'm not sure if it would work for shooting, but might work for lapping in this case.

I am a furniture builder by profession, So I will probably use a router setup for the side cuts. I knew the bottom should follow the barrel but was hoping I didn't have to re-invent the wheel,so to speak, to do it. Your suggestions were what I was looking for. Not having to worry too much about...
I want to build a Hawken based rifle with a swamped barrel. I will be making the stock, but am not sure on making the channel for the swamped barrel. Any suggestions? The sides don't worry me too much, but the arch for the bottom has me wondering.

I,too, have this idea. To share some thoughts. I have an original sxs 12 ga. percussion with the type of breech plugs you describe that is a hooked breech with a hook coming off each plug. TOW shows hooked breech plugs which consist of only the threaded plug w/hook coming off it...
I have an old set of sxs 12 ga. barrels, saved just in case. While lurking here, I saw mention of converting to flint by tapping, plugging, and then building a gun around them. The building of the gun part, I understand, but is installing the plugs much like a rifle, only twice. More...
Back in the 60s,IIRC, Science & Mechanics magazine had an article on building a scale model Parrot rifle with detailed drawings for the barrel and carriage. I can't put my hands on it right now, but if you are interested, I can copy it for you.

It appears I have committed a faux pas in my anxiety to find a solution to my difficulties by mentioning those plastic thingies. I did not read the rules carefully enough, so now, I apologise to any I may have offended.
When I finish this post, I shall move over to that other forum which...
Bought a used T/C .50 Hawken a while back. It was a very good price, but when you get a ball stuck and remove it by welding a drill bit on a rod to drill it out & don't stop until you start coming out the breech plug, it really cuts down on the value. *****! (him, not me) Anyway, after...
