    Sighting in Snaphaunce

Granted, I have the larger Snaphaunce lock from TRS, but the frizzen pivot geometry is really quick- As soon as the flint impacts, the frizzen pops over with just the first kiss, and the pan cover pushrod has full contact with arm. I was very surprised at the action, just as good as any...

    Spring Temper Followup

This is the followup post to my previous spring questions. I had some rather substantial mainsprings to harden/temper and was wondering about getting a thorough enough temper "soak" so that the spring would be durable and would get evenly tempered. The steel is 6150, and these are TRS...

    Sighting in Snaphaunce

I just did 2 TRS Frizzens for the "English Snaphaunce Musket". Did both with Oxy/Acetylene and quenched one in linseed, and the other tap water. I have not assembled the lock 100% but it feels like a nice surface with the old "flint in the pliers trick" I have a known super sparker frizzen...

    Made one last night.......

Here it is! The Gonne is turned from a chunk of 1144(?) steel that I had on the rack. Length is 8.8" and the bore is .40 x 5.30" I bored the socket to 6 degrees (included angle- 3 per side) by 1.75" deep. Never mind the Tiller, I just slapped a broomstick in there to get the feel- I will...

    Permalyn vs Tru Oil

Permalyn- The sealer is very thin and easy to work with. Different woods require different techniques/finish. Maple is typically "tight" and just the application of Permalyn sealer can get the job done perfectly. In my opinion, I like the wood to be sealed/finished right to the edge, meaning...

    Gonne number two

What is the recipe for a powder channel? Are you just going straight bore back, or running a smaller diameter powder "bore"? Any kind of constant if you run a powder chamber, like 1/2 bore diameter by X and X etc.? I have a big lathe and a ton of steel, and you have me motivated now! I have...

    The "Myth" of Cylinder Swapping?

I would think that if you had an operable arm, and you knew that it would reliably fire, you would not discard it, and pick up another. You could only "go pick em up" if you were victorious, and no soldier bets on that one. I was in the Army for a pretty long time, and we would never just swap...

The bands give it a very martial look-

    Perma Blue

Cold Bluing is kind of like a rattle-can paintjob, no matter how well you do it, durability is for naught. As posted above, warming the metal will definitely help things along, but if you start to get the least bit serious about a durable "blue" then there are other courses of action. BC...

Sounds right to me, "Modern Muzzleloader" would be more correct.

A Bit of a Problem with Smokepole Prices

I often think about the same thing. I am very proud of my work, and hope that it is around centuries from now. I will always stamp/engrave the actual date of manufacture, for example, my last Snaphaunce says my name and 2007, and on the barrel underside, I clearly stamp YR. 20-- etc. on all my...

    1860 Army problems.

Funny story, a bit related. I was in Fairbanks, Alaska learning to be a machinist, and this guy walks in with one of those canvas money sacks from a bank...... He proceeds to pull out a C&B pistol. He states that it is a Civil War relic handed down from his so and so in the family. It needs...

A Bit of a Problem with Smokepole Prices

Once you start building your own, you will see that the prices are extremely fair. It's funny, but just last night as I wrapped up the day's work on my latest Snaphaunce (many hours to go yet), I remember thinking that making a living doing this stuff would be brutal. As to the disparity? One...

    Blackpowder Respect-

Here is the spot where the priming powder remained, and this was where my left hand was. It is in the shape of the African Continent BTW. My hand has healed, but you can see where it ignited. The heat was intense. I was confused for a second after the flash, but then it all came back to me...

    Seal the stock?

Same here, everything gets sealed. I run a .22 cleaning rod with a loose patch down the RR hole and even get it in the holes for the buttplate screws.........everything. Q-tips are only good for applying sealer in a smooth hole, any rough hole will have cotton fluff all over.
