    Load development

It's always good to try both 2 & 3 f in your rifles. I have had rifles that absolutely couldn't hit the ground using one or the other yet gave great accuracy otherwise.

    Ball Board

What did you use to make the ball board in the upper left of this picture? It's very light colored; is it bone? https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/attachments/img_0632-jpg.134395/

    Some powder horns I made

I'm late to this party but those horns are quite nice, you should be proud of your work. I'd be proud to carry one of your horns too.

1st Casting Session Went Well- Thanks To All for Help

My experience with the GPH barrel led me to using a 220 grain Lee REAL bullet cast from pure lead. I also found that it didn't care for TC maxis or the Great Plains bullets but no matter what I tried, the addition of a lubed fiber wad improved accuracy. I also had to go up to a heavy charge of...

    Range Shooting Box

There's a fellow that goes by Spider over on another forum who makes real nice range boxes. From pine to Osage Orange, on type is a flat top and the other is a slant front. Both can store up to two, 1 pound containers of powder too. I've got four of them, which is probably too many but life is...

FOR SALE 1858 Remington .44 for sale. Unfired.

That is better described as a cap and ball revolver as it doesn't really load at the muzzle. Fun and accurate guns though.

    Gun Fit

Oh yes, and what a difference it can make! After many years of having to fit myself to the rifle I was finally able to buy my first custom made rifle, or maybe I should say semi I custom since I sent him a factory made rifle for him to use the barrel among other parts to make mine. We talked...

    Hog hunting

Sounds like you've got it down pat, was your Lyman GPR the first kit you ever tackled? I've found that Lyman/Investarms barrels need up to 100 shots put through them before really good accuracy is achieved. Was your GPR similar?

    Hog hunting

I agree. In the early 90's I could still find a few land owners who welcomed responsible hunters onto their farms/ranches to take wild hogs. They would do so without charging a fee or some would charge $1 so that legally it was a contract and there was less liability. Then some folks started...

    Houston, we have a problem...

Here's a suggestion for both patch and swab which I find to work well. First, get some 100% cotton flannel for your swabs. Most fabric stores sell it without any dyes or design s, just plain white but as long as it's all cotton it will do. Cut into appropriate sized squares, ones that just...

    1858 Remington

First, take out the main spring and inspect it. At the top and bottom of the spring, are the edges rough? If so, then you may need to touch up a rough edge with a file, but go slowly. Inspect the slots that each end of the spring sits in. Any rough edges, debris? Check out VTI Gun parts. They...

    long range

That's a GPH barrel you have there, Great Plains Hunter. I had one and got great accuracy from it using 95 grains of 3f Goex, lubed fiber wad and a 220 Lee REAL bullet on top. Please work up a load in your rifle first though, don't start with anything more than 50 grains.

    Swabbing between shot for safety.

Good idea for long guns but for revolvers, I am doubtful. Also, a patch dripping with alcohol will render a fresh powder charge completely or partially inert, something I have witnessed first hand. The powder charge in my .54 rifle was partially inert due to too much fluid and the resulting hang...

    Hello friends from Souteast Texas

Howdy from South-Central Texas. Post some pics of Rebeka when you get a chance. Oops, just enlarged the picture and saw her name engraved on the frame she's in.

Tickled with my new (old) GPR - anything I should check for before shooting?

Great action/flame shot! If I may suggest something that works for me. Swabbing between shots whether at the range, during a match or while hunting has always been beneficial and I'd like to first say that I'm not saying that you've got to do this as well. Also, this isn't commentary regarding...
