    Antiqued 1858 Pietta

A small bottle is plenty as it goes a long way. I tried a lot of brands and this worked best for me. This one is a black finish. If you want a blue color the Brownells Oxpho-Blue is great too.

    Antiqued 1858 Pietta

I have both types of the Brownells solutions and I used the cream type on this gun as I like it best. I only used two coats. The more you apply the darker it gets and I wanted a used looking finish.

    Antiqued 1858 Pietta

I removed the factory blue and the muddy looking stock finish on my Pietta 1858 Remington. Then ground the metal grip frame smaller just a bit behind the trigger guard for more knuckle room and used Brownell's T-4 gun black solution. Not to look like an antique but just because I did not like...

    How do you prime?

I most often use a brass tube with a spring-loaded tip that I made to be longer than the ones available from the usual sources. The other one here I made from an old horn tip handle I found for $3 at a junk shop because it matches my powder horn color and markings.

    How to refinish Chromium Trioxide

I like the LMF Maple stain best of their colors. I used it on this Leman stock which I think turned out well.

    Early Dixie Gun Works revolvers

Some of their kit guns were made by Palmetto Arms. I have a Dixie Colt kit gun from the 1970s with the tree inside a circle trademark just before the serial# on the cylinder. Researching that mark I found it was Palmetto Arms in Italy which is out of business. The barrel was marked like yours...

    Pietta Sheriff's model 44 caliber

I have a Pietta Remington Steel Frame Sherriff's Model that has a dovetail front sight. I found tall target front sights at S&S Firearms internet site. With a little filing the base width they slide right in snug on the barrel. They come tall so you can file them to your desired height. I...

Old FIE 1858 Remington .44 Brass Frame Revolver

Thats good to know they are just made that way. I will just try to smooth up the hand and bolt surfaces to see if it helps the cycling of the cylinder and get it to shooting. Thanks jdesro

Old FIE 1858 Remington .44 Brass Frame Revolver

Thanks Jappo, It will shoot but you can tell It was not a high quality gun.

Old FIE 1858 Remington .44 Brass Frame Revolver

The bore lines up perfectly with the cylinder chambers when locked up at full **** and you can not line up nipples by turning on the cylinder. No side play at all with the bolt either. Thats why it would seem to me to be a slight frame warp at the rear or the wrong cylinder even though cylinder...

Old FIE 1858 Remington .44 Brass Frame Revolver

Thats right. Everything else lines up as I it should but the nipples seem to be located off in the cylinder so they are almost to the edge of the hammer slot on the right side when looking down the barrel from the back. I wonder if it is the frame thats warped. Everything lining up at the...

Old FIE 1858 Remington .44 Brass Frame Revolver

The cylinder does rotate easy by hand on half ****. I just found a PN stamp on the cylinder and also on the frame so it must be the original cylinder. I noticed the nipples are not centered in the hammer slot on full ****. The loading ram is centered and works fine to load a ball and the...

Old FIE 1858 Remington .44 Brass Frame Revolver

I disassembled the gun and cleaned/lubed inside so it cocks easy and smooth until the cylinder is installed. The hand just won't rotate the cylinder without feeling balky. He does not know if the hand or cylinder are the original ones though. I suspect the cylinder but don't see any ID marks...

Old FIE 1858 Remington .44 Brass Frame Revolver

A friend inherited this revolver with a bunch of other guns. It was very hard to **** so he brought it to me to check. I guess it is just worn out in the hand slot because of heavy use over the years on the brass frame. Here is a picture of the hand at half **** and the slot chimney base was...

2024 cap update, bad and the bad

I love my air guns almost as much as muzzleloaders. I built a few PCP guns using high pressure tubes pumped to 3000psi. They shoot a .28grain .25cal pellet at 900fps for 50.37fpe. I would not like to be hit with one of those either. They will take out even a groundhog size pest with one shot...

2024 cap update, bad and the bad

I just donated some #11s to the local 4H black powder club. They have agreed to do a shooting demonstration for my wife's Daughters of the American Revolution group. I bought 25 tins total from several Walmarts last fall for $5.62ea. They are $9.99 now at the gun store where I shop. They...

    Hole Through the Barrel

Hard to believe someone would drill holes in a barrel without setting a depth stop either on the drill press travel or drill bit to limit the depth of the hole for the desired screws length. Even just the drill bit itself can be set with one of the little doughnut shaped stops that lock on with...

    Shining Times

After using 0000 steel wool I like to go over the stock with a strong magnet to get out the wool strands from all the spots they hide in before waxing or rubbing out the finish with a polishing cloth.

    Convert percussion to flintlock.

I have converted two guns. One was an older Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle that was made to convert as both locks were interchangeable as were the drum and flint vent liner. That one was easy and has worked great for the last 30 years. The other is my Leman Rifle built from parts. It has a CVA...

    trigger guard

You could find a small rifle trigger guard wide enough and long enough to cover the inlets in the stock and cut it down to size then anneal, file and bend to shape. That is what I did on this one because the original pistol guard I ordered was too small for my finger. I just had to cut off the...
