How many guns on a hunting trip?

Having done many hunts in remote areas accessible only by plane. I always bring two long guns capable of taking whatever game I am hunting. Two much money invested to loose the use of a primary gun. I had a bad river crossing experience that made me choose to drown or loose the gun. it was an...

stove placement (for those that have one)

My French bell tent has the stove insert on the right side just inside the door, small fire keeps the tent warm even at below zero temps. I also have a 14' x 18' marque for long rondies and when the family is attending. It does not have a stove hole in it, so I made a plywood wall panel to...

Antler/bone/ivory furniture and inlays on a jaeger.

Here are pictures of my Jaeger, The patch box cover is fossilized ivory and the nosecap is antler from a Red Stag I picked up in Scotland. I have an Original Jaeger that has a horn nosecap, and a bronze patchbox cover, I don't have any good pics of that one.

    Slab Chair?

They are Viking cross frame chairs, I made several out of 2x12 lumber, after getting the height and angle adjusted I love them. I have been using mine for 20 years, I put a sheepskin on mine and have fallen asleep many time but only tipped over a few times.

IF you had only one caliber to choose

I think the intent was, if you could only have one gun/one caliber what would you choose. I would have to go with my .72 cal. Brown Bess smoothbore. Since the game I hunt is very big (Moose) or very small( Grouse) having the ability to shoot prb or shot makes it the most versatile gun to have.

    1860 Colt Original?

I viewed your link, The butt is cut for a stock but the frame does not have the 4th screw to even attach the shoulder stock.

    1860 Colt Original?

I compared the photos to my Original colt 1860(made 1863) and there is quite a bit of difference. The sights do not match what mine has, the front site on mine has a lower profile and is brass. It has no rear sight on the barrel. Also mine is a 4 screw model designed for the butt stock assembly...

    The BIGGEST Bore Rifle????

I saw a single shot ML with a 1" bore at a gun show display in Wasilla, AK last fall. The owner had used it in Africa to hunt cape buffalo and hippo, he had the head/skulls on display along with the gun and pictures of the hunt. He used a Conical lead bullet of 1950 grs and a 250 gr charge of 2F...

20 inch .58 cal tube any PRB experience

I have a Tradegun That has a 22" barrel, .62 cal. It has a standard turtle front sight and a Jaeger rear site. Very accurate out to 50 yards, pie plate group, at 75 yards man size targets. I have taken a moose with it as well as small game, my standard load is 70 gr of 3F and a patched .600...

    atmospheric conditions on percussion sidelocks

I have hunted all over Alaska and the lower 48, my rifles have always fired when it was time. In prince William sound I have hunted deer in rainy weather and in wet snow. As long has I did my part and kept the lock dry it worked fine. I have hunted caribou at -20 deg. and the gun fired just as...

Using 3fg in the .62/20ga flintlock trade musket

I use 3F in my Trade gun all the time as well as in my Bess, I also use it to prime the pan. I have never had any ignition problems. In the trade gun I shoot 70gr. 3F with a patched .600 ball. in my Bess I use 90gr of 3F and a patched .705 ball. You should have good results using 3F, I use Goex...

    Converted knapsack making and question

Option 1. When you sew on the leather bases use a thin piece of leather inside as a backer, this will sandwich the cloth between the leather and will take the stress off the fabric. Using the round ball method is fine for emergency work but why do that when you can have a nicely sewn pack.

    .69 Brown Bess? .63 Char?

The 95th rifles and other "green Jackets" were issued the Baker Rifles they fire a .665 belted ball that fit the rifling, slower to load but very accurate at long range. Also the majority of British muskets were closer to .77 cal. and as much as .80 cal. they issued undersize balls due to the...

    Pedersoli Bess carbine round ball

My Bess carbine has a .729 bore, I have been using a patched .705 ball for many years with 90gr of 3F. I am thinking of upping to a .710 ball. I have used .715 balls with no patch and just a wad over powder and over ball. Without the patched ball the fouling builds up faster.

What to do with a beaver pelt?

Mittens are a great idea, I made a pair from a black beaver I caught many years ago. I lined them with thin suiting wool, they are incredibly warm.

    Bess carbine shot load

I have a Bess carbine as well and use it for everything. My shot loads are 90gr of 3F, 1/2" fiber wad,1 1/2 oz of #6 shot and another 1/2" fiber wad on top. This give a good pattern to 25-30 yards on rabbits and grouse. If I need a tighter pattern for longer range I have found that if I make a...

    Inexpensive Flintlock: Fun, or Frustration?

I was given one of these guns as a gift in 1975, a flintlock in .44cal. I was just a kid but this gun got me hooked on black powder and flintlocks. That rifle was reliable and accurate. I shot my second deer ever with that rifle and have been hunting with flinters ever since. I think for a first...

PRB Ball Size for .729 Bore?

My Pedersoli Bess has a .729 bore. I use a .705 ball with a .018 to .020 patch. A thick patch works great for the first dozen shots, then the fouling builds up so I go with a thinner patch, during a long shoot it comes down to a bare ball over a wad. I can get about 40 shots off before I must...
