I have the opportunity to pick up Remington Gold Balls for $2/100. A friend wants to get rid of them. Do any of you, have any experience with them and how do they compare with other manufactured balls in consistency shooting? They are 0.490 size. I know they are cheap enough but if I buy them I have to buy them all and he has about 12 boxes. If I don't get them he has someone else who wants them. DANNY

Have only used them in .54 cal. and they were very accurate. Also they don't oxidize. Looked all over and eveidently they stopped making them.

Don't hesitate and buy them.....not only is the price a "steal" but you're buying quality RBs.....Fred

I tried those nearly 25yrs ago.
They're just a copper wash over a lead ball and marketed as "harder" because of the copper.
What I do remember is they weren't any better than just common ball, therefore not worth the extra cost at the time.
I don't remember them being any worse.
At $2 per 100 and twelve boxes I'd jump on it. I think I would weigh them individually and separate into groups if I was looking for the best groups from'm.
But 12 boxes is over 25# of lead that could be sold to someone for casting to get your money back if you don't lik'm.

Yes, they were probably made for Remington under contract by Hornady, Speer, Buffalo, etc...I'm sure Remington didn't go set up an entire lead ball manufacturing investment for what would only be a grain of sand in their overall revenue stream. I stumbled across a couple dozen boxes on Ebay several years ago for a similar low price.

I bought 5 boxes of .490s for 5.00 a box a month or so ago Hornadys. Thought I stole them! BUY THEM. Nothing wrong with the Gold Ball's for that price. Larry

I have shot about a half of a box on a range and had excellent results, both in single patched and double ball to 100 yards. Looking for a few more boxes as we speak. I would enjoy getting a few more boxes of the .490 sizes. I patched with .15 thousand's pre=lubed pillow tacking. Great results...

I agree with the others! That is a give away price. They are coated swaged lead balls. I think it was a wax coating.

One of my hunting pard absolutely reveres them. He acknowledges they're no more accurate than any other, but he just likes em. At $2/100, I'd be looking in the corners for more boxes!
