    Drill Cloth = FantasticI

I dried my washed drill cloth in the drier to get the maximum shrinkage and tightest weave. My washed and dried drill compresses to .018, my guns love it.

    second SMR hog

I use a peep on my deer rifle, I hunt mostly in the evening, the deer usually show up in the last 30 minutes of light. I paint my front sight white for dim light hunting, I can see the front sight so well as seen through my peep it is almost like cheating when the light is getting dim.

For the Want of a Wire Coat Hanger

I keep what is probably a lifetime supply in the corner of my closet, I seldom need one, but every now and then..........

    Woodsrunner Question?

Bad carving looks ten times worse than no carving, as a once upon a time artist of sorts, what looks good to a guy with no carving or art experience looks amateurish to me. I was a very good duck decoy carver but come up short on carving rifles because my heart just isn't in it and I haven't...

Regrets with L and R lock for Traditions?

I put an L&R in a TC renegade percussion stock, it was a difficult swap, I ended up moving the barrel back about 3/16" to get the touch hole centered with the pan. Seems like I lengthened the underlug slots just a little and had to cut some off the under rib to move the barrel back. Of course...

    Kibler Gap Question

I cut all of my gap closing shims out of the same wood as my stock and orientate the shim grain to be the same as the place being filled. Well, not always from the same stock wood, on this pre-carve I didn't have any scrap wood from the stock so I usewhat I had on hand which was plain maple...

    Kibler Gap Question

Looks mostly cosmetic to me, when you black the back of the barrel is there plenty of black on the back of the inlet? I fixed the barrel inlet before I did the tang in this picture. Mostly like this, in my opinion this is good enough, you can glue in a thin shim to close the gap, I have done...

    How old is this powder?

I picked this estate sale stuff up for $100. From all of the other parts it appears to be from the 60s or 70s. I wonder what the 30-06 cases with what appears to be cast lead tops were for, the tops don't come off. The price tag says $4.98

    Browning a lock?

I brown the outside of lock plate and pan, I polish the inside of the pan, all the parts of the hammer, all of the frizzen except the face where the flint hits and the ends of any of the screws that show where they come to the surface of the lock plate as well as the outside of frizzen spring. I...

Baking Soda to stop rusting process.

I agree with rchas, all of the small parts I submerged in ammonia overnight stopped rusting immediately, wiping it on a barrel wasn't nearly as effective. Browned and submerged in ammonia, no after rust.

Who among us are PIPE smokers?

I grew up in east Tennessee, we started out with rabbit tobacco in our homemade corn cob pipes and gravitated to stuffing our pipes with remnants of cigarette butts that we picked up off the side of the road. I started smoking Lucky Strikes or Camels when I was 12. At 16 I was a pack a day...

Baking Soda to stop rusting process.

I found that LMF is at times hard to get to stop rusting. I mixed up a slurry of baking soda and water to be paste-like and covered my barrel with it. The rusting didn't stop so I wiped the barrel down several times with ammonia, it still didn't stop. I was assured by the guys here that the...

Trying to get an ID or any info really. No serial numbers or nothing

I often wonder about these types of guns, adult builder, boy scout project or just an average Joe who loved the Davy Crockett series and wanted to make his own gun at a time when there was very little reference material for him to draw from. The front sight on backwards is a dead giveaway about...

    TC Hawken

The gun I bought new in the box was probably 20 years ago, not an early production, TC was still making them then. It had a touch hole that was so far back in the pan that you could barely see it. When I saw this, I sent it back to TC and they said they didn't see a problem with it, the old TC...

    Hawken repair question

I would fill the area and re-rill the holes, if you leave the parts in place, you may not be able to remove them if you need to make adjustments to the inlet. Don't use super glue gel, use thin stuff. Put tape on the barrel side of the cracked area to keep the dust out of the barrel channel...

    Hawken repair question

For that small of a fix, you are looking at $25 or so for a small tub of acraglass shipped or 25 cents worth of superglue and sawdust. Superglue turns sawdust into concrete, your patch would be 10 times stronger than the surrounding wood. I put down a drop of super glue, sprinkle a little...
