  1. Steve Martin

Want to get into Muzzleloading and have a lot of questions so I figured I would post in this forum.

Just as several others have already said, get busy buying all the black powder you can right now! 2F and 3F, buy from any stores that may have it, buy from any friends dumb enough to sell you some...you get the idea? Without a decent supply of black powder it isn't going to matter what...

    GOEX sold?

Hope the story is true. I think the most likely buyer would be Dupont since they already have the needed business contacts and probably the permits as well.

    Replacement lock for Lyman GP

The replacement lock for the Great Plains Rifle is called the RPL #05 by L&R. I did that very replacement myself about four years ago on my Lyman GPR and it made a world of difference! As others have said it is not exactly a "drop-in" replacement but it wasn't all that tough either. I think I...

    Tightening the Jaw Screw?

Keep the jaw screw's threads clean and LIGHTLY oiled and you should be able to tighten the flint very securely long before you could break or strip anything!

    Newbie Question

Larry (Omaha) pretty much covered it but I would offer one extra little bit of advice - In addition to a ball puller, buy a CO2 powered "unloader" you will soon be sooo glad you did! I used baller pullers for over two years before I got smart and bought my unloader. Man do I wish I had done...

    Flintlocks and Black Powder

Since I'm only a target shooter and not a hunter, I could carry a bunch of different powder and stuff with me to shoot but I look like a squatter coming to set up a homestead as it is now when I pull up at the range! I have never used anything but 3f as both the main charge and the pan primer...

OK now I’ve really screwed up. Options?

Snooterpup - we have all made mistakes worse than that at one time or another, at least I sure have. You certainly can fix it but it will take you a little extra time and effort. I do believe that IF you decide to strip and refinish, I would strip the entire stock and start from "scratch"...

    Casting Issue

As others here have said those marks indicate the lead is too cool. I use a Lee bottom pour pot and my average pour is about 750 degrees or between the number 5 and number 6 on the temperature control dial. The balls will be very "frosted" if you get the lead too hot, then back off the temp...

    Walnut Dust

I have asthma and always wear a mask (sometimes I STILL have problems for a couple days), be smart and wear a mask.

India made vs Italian, USA etc, RB accuracy at 50 yds

The answer to your question is...no.
  12. Steve Martin

I have so much to learn!

Stone - you said you wanted advice from those of us that have been messing with flintlocks for quite some time. Trust us when we tell you that Flintlocks are meant for black powder. I love shooting (and working on) these guns but believe me, trying to use black powder substitutes just adds a...

Metric Screws on Dixie Mountain Rifle

Probably best known name these days would be Pedersoli. Made in Italy, metric screws. As stated by Hawkeye2, if they were made outside the U.S., they will be metric.

    Glue advice

Titebond professional strength wood glue has worked well for me in the past.

Stuck ball in a Thompson Center Hawken flint

I have a CO2 "unloader" myself and believe me that will be the best $40 you will ever spend for a muzzleloading accessory!

    Aged Revolvers

    NICE. Very well done!

How many shots can you get-When you have a GREAT flint ?

True, and I am impressed with blackpowderbills flint maintenance ability but without a great lock, he would have knapped the flint down to nothing over 100 shots ago.

tallpine is right, that's a great lock you have not a great flint!
