In my experience the L&R RPL is a performance upgrade to the Lyman/Investarms flintlock. I’ve installed a few in Lyman rifles and found them to be somewhat of a PIA to install, not exactly a drop in replacement. Lockplate geometry doesn’t match Lyman factory mortice very well (too large in some areas, too small in others) plus it’s a crapshoot if it will line up with factory touchhole location. This has nothing to do with the wood you have to remove for the locks internal springs, which I find simple and straightforward.

Is anyone aware of a direct fit replacement lock for a Lyman GP rifle? I have never been happy with the performance of the original.

You might consider sending the lock to Cabin Creek for a work over, I've read good things about their work.

I sent one of my locks which did not spark well to Log Cabin. They did a good job and happy with their work.

Above is cheaper than a new lock and you do not have to remove any wood or work on the stock.

RMC OX-Yoke has all the replacement parts for your lock..

The replacement lock for the Great Plains Rifle is called the RPL #05 by L&R. I did that very replacement myself about four years ago on my Lyman GPR and it made a world of difference! As others have said it is not exactly a "drop-in" replacement but it wasn't all that tough either. I think I spent about 30-40 minutes fitting it. Now, maybe I just got lucky but that was my experience.

L&R is a great option. I’ve done a few and none have dropped in. The toughest was on a very early Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle which has a much narrower stock and barrel than later models the lock was designed for. They are all well worth the effort if you can’t locate replacement components for your original.

Given Eric's experience in fitting a new lock, may I suggest trying to slick up the existing one. I.e., take photos of it so you know how the assembled lock goes together; disassemble it; and polish all mating surfaces* with your very fine abrasive of choice. I did mine, including the top of the trigger levers with a Cratex wheel and bob (bullet shaped thing) in a Dremel with a hand piece for very precise control and couldn't believe the difference it made. Btw, the screw (bolt actually) for the double set triggers is an odd pitch and thread and is too short to do any good. I think Dixon's in PA carries replacements of the proper type.

*Don't forget both sides of the bridle as well.
