Tired of wasting lead. Bullet trap ideas?

No, only on my modern rifles. However, I can shoot 10 grains of BP in my .36 cal rifle and it makes little noise. I load 10 grains of corn meal on top and a patched ball and, at 25 yards, I can keep a 2 inch group. My centerfire rifles all have threads so they are dead quiet when I am...

Tired of wasting lead. Bullet trap ideas?

The nice thing about sand barrels is that they don't bother the neighbors. In the valleys around my part of the woods, clanging steel would carry for a couple of miles.

Grinding all three together dry is like playing Russian Roulette.

    Powder shortage effects

Good post and quite correct. While there have been some domestic gangs who have used BP for pipe bombs, they have been few and far between. As one poster said earlier, this was a business decision by Hogdon because they weren't getting their return on investment due to the shrinking market...

Snail type bullet traps can be really heavy.

Anyone make a small concealable percussion pistol

If you want to carry in the woods, the smallest I recommend is the .36 1861 Colt Sheriff's Model. Additionally, here is a good read on BP for self defense. https://www.gunsandammo.com/editorial/cap-ball-revolvers-for-self-defense/247522

Anyone make a small concealable percussion pistol

I too would recommend not carrying a single shot BP pistol for self defense. It might have a cool factor to you but it may just get you killed.

Tired of wasting lead. Bullet trap ideas?

I use five gallon and smaller buckets filled with sand for all my around the house shooting. I use a collander to separate the lead and reuse the sand. I use duct tape over the holes and stick on targets.

Brand new to muzzleloading, near Annapolis

Welcome. I am also from Maryland. A good club to belong to if you plan to build and shoot muzzleloaders is Marriottsville Muzzleloaders. They shoot at the Associated Gun Club ranges and have a pretty good bunch of members.

    Powder shortage effects

I have made it many years ago via mortar and pestal in small amounts. It was slower than regular Goex and left more debris in the barrel. At my age, I have no interest in making anymore. I have no problem using substitutes.

    BOY IS IT STUCK!

I have done the exact same thing in the past. I used priming powder, as much as I could get in through the touch hole and it blew the brush right out. Now I use shotgun brushes with a shotgun rod. This is much sturdier than a 10-32 set up and I have never had one pull out.

    Powder shortage effects

To make my BP last longer, I use 20gn BP and 45 gns of Pyro Rifle or 40 grains of Pyro P and it gives me the same POI as 60 grains of BP in my Flintlocks. Many stores do not want to stock BP due to the small amount of people wanting it and the regulatory cost of storing it.

Well, even though it doesn't seem like much, the .36 is easier to handle when loading. The .32, a .310 ball is just so much smaller and, unless you have very slim fingers, is harder to position on the patch. Additionally, I found that the .36 gave me more effective hunting range.

    Pyrodex P

Just make sure you follow the volume reduction rules on T7. Also, T7 tends to make a hard crud ring when you are shooting alot. You have to pay attention so you don't accidentally seat the ball on the crud ring leaving air space in the chamber.

Yup P = FFF and RS = RS.

He can install a liner with no problem. I suggest .36 as .32 tends to be harder to handle those little balls.

As far as I know from building over the years, the smooth bore barrel is too thin to be cut and needs a liner.
