What, no double ball loads?
i don't know what your basing the historical data on? these are back up weapons not to be relied on, in the BP days you probably carried a sabre or dagger in conjunction with your BP pistol. which you had atleast two on your personThese little guns never worked even back then when they were popular, look around people who carried them are all dead now. Shouldn't need more proof than that.
i have to look up the laws for this here in California, they just recntly banned ghost guns here so I'm worried these BP firearms might fall under that law
i plan on using BP pistol for coyote/snake deterent when in the wood , not for walking the tough streets of the ghettos. I have a couple semi autos for that. i just dont want to carry a semiauto because our Commy forestry department will not let me open-carry on trails
so the more powerfull pistol would be a something like the traditions pistol kit? would that handle more powder load?Carrying something for self-defense means your LIFE may be on the line. Do you really want to stake your LIFE on an anemic BP derringer based on 200 year old technology? Many unmentionables out there that will fill your requirements with much more reliability & lethality. Think about it! I own several BP derringers.
The 31 cal "vest pocket' will not penetrate a pumpkin shell @ 10 feet! The "screw barrel" powder chamber has a limited capacity of about 9 grains & is a powder puff! The Philly is hard to get out of a pocket because of the big hammer & is also anemic. Remember Lincoln got shot in the head at point blank range & he took hours to die. The New Orleans "Ace" is the only one that packs a marginally effective load with 20 grains of powder, a 45 cal ball, & a longer barrel, but it is more suited to boot carry than in a pocket. People used these guns in the past because that's all they had! I enjoy & shoot all my derringers, but in no way would I trust my LIFE to them. Just my two cents.

I'd sooner one of Wingard's tomahawks than a single shot small caliber muzzle loader.something I can keep in a pocket for 1 shot?

Maybe the more important thing to do for your safety, not to mention your sanity, is to move OUT of Cali.i have to look up the laws for this here in California, they just recntly banned ghost guns here so I'm worried these BP firearms might fall under that law

A further thought. Where you are talking about might have grizzlies. Absent a hand grenade there is nothing you can carry in your pocket that will be any help at all if you somehow provoke grizz. And I would not promise a hand grenade would do the necessary.Maybe the more important thing to do for your safety, not to mention your sanity, is to move OUT of Cali.
Coyote is almost everywhere. I've found him on the waterfront in Philadelphia. He will avoid a man like the plague if he can at all. What snake are you worried about? Give most any snake the opportunity and he will disappear. I carry for the best reason there is to carry. Two legged creatures that walk upright but are not well socialized.

I refer only to your comment that the Philadelphia Deringer is anemic. Compared to a Colt’s Dragoon it is. For it’s size it is not. Anyone who shoots a good high quality .41 with enough 3Fg in it to get the ball up to 680-700 fps will tell you right quick that it is a thundering handful that is a serious little pistol.Carrying something for self-defense means your LIFE may be on the line.
