Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

I moved recently and I’m finally in the process of changing my storage room into a workshop. This is going to be the workbench I use to work on my guns. It was my great grandfathers so I’m the fourth generation to use it. I’m still waiting for my mat and a few more things.

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

I've always had a strange fascination with the way mechanical things work, I've always only worn mechanical watches, and ever since I was a kid I've been taking things apart and putting them back together

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

The first small crew I dropped on a dark carpet literally took me twenty minutes to find. I've put disassembly on hold until I set up my work bench., with my mat, magnetic containers, etc.

bn The first thing I did after I read your post was make a full size print out of the diagram above. It's already helped me out quite a bit!

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

Thanks! Just ordered both, got four different size weighted bowls for $9.99 and a mat for $14.99. All the stuff I bought so far is going to make a lot of different tasks I undertake easier.

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

That's way better and easier than the way I usually do it (draw a picture and number the screws then put them on/in paper or containers with corresponding numbers) Thanks, just ordered my my mat and a set of four different size weighted bowls for $9.99.

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

It's interesting that you mentioned that. After reading up on basic gunsmithing tools, the largest expense I made was for a set of screwdrivers specifically designed for gunsmiths. When they arrived I took out a few screws and quickly discovered there was pretty much no way I could have done it...

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

Well, I got all my basic gunsmithing tools and I'm ready to take apart my new 44 cal Pietta 1851 Navy to learn what makes it tick. I still plan to send it to a real gunsmith to smooth out the terrible action and make a few other adjustments I want. I know...

Wedge Issue: Any pointers for getting the wedge out of a Pietta 1851 Navy for the first time.

Mike, I have a new Pietta 1851 Navy that I want to have tuned so the action is much smoother and things like the wedge don't require a hammer and punches to remove. Please let me know where to send the gun and how much to include as payment, or if that's something not allowed on this forum...

Wedge Issue: Any pointers for getting the wedge out of a Pietta 1851 Navy for the first time.

Thanks for all the great advice! thanks guys for all the great advice! After I posted my question I decided not to risk damaging the finish and I ordered a mallet and punch set, a set of small metal files, and a screwdriver set designed specifically for use on guns. I still plan to take it...

Wedge Issue: Any pointers for getting the wedge out of a Pietta 1851 Navy for the first time.

I just got my 1851 Navy and I'm have more than just a little bit of a hard time trying to get the wedge out. I'll admit I'm not being excessively forceful because I don't want to damage the blueing. I just figured I can't be the first one to experience this, and was hoping to learn any tricks...

    Hello from NE PA

I'm stuck right now trying to get the wedge to slide out so I can access the cylinder, etc. I don't want to damage the finish so I've been pretty gentle with it. Oh, and the action is terrible, I think that's going to be job #1.

    Hello from NE PA

You would think that after a career as a police officer, even a SWAT team member, I would be pretty familiar with most weapons, but I just bought a Pietta 44 cal. 1851 Navy and it's all new to me. (I am having a ton of fun learning about it though!) The first thing we always did whenever we were...
