    Wax Wads?

No, the felt wads were impregnated with something (smelled like Bore Butter) but they felt pretty dry to me so I smeared some more Bore Butter on the tops (on the ball side) before putting the ball in. Seemed like the thing to do. I must say, the thing cleaned up very easily.

    Wax Wads?

Thanks G B. That's kinda what I suspected they were. I actually ended up shooting all my balls with the felt wads and didn't use the wax ones.

    Wax Wads?

When I ordered my 1858 from Cabela's, it came with a kit of stuff like a plastic flask, capper, and two bads of wads: one of dry-lubed felt wads (smelled like Bore Butter), and another bag of what appear to be wax wads. They feel waxy at any rate. They also smell minty like Bore Butter does...

    New Revolver is coming

Well, I finally got a chance to shoot my new Pietta 1858 New Army. It was awesome. It came with some balls (29 of them) and I fired them all. Not one single misfire. One time, a cap got hung and I had to dislodge it before cocking the next round. Lots of fun - cant wait to buy more ammo...

    New Revolver is coming

After the extensive discussions here lately on cap and ball revolvers, I decided to buy one from Cabela's. I bought the Pietta 1858 New Army reproduction. Can't wait! I'd better figure out a range to go to and shoot.

    Size of Felt Wads?

I've been reading this thread : "Loading a .36 caliber Colt revolver" and I got to wondering. If you want to top your powder with felt wads, what size should they be? Same size as the bore or same size as the ball? Just wondering. I'm pretty enthralled with these things and am gonna buy my...

    How to find a gunsmith?

I've often read here the (good) advice to have a gun checked out by a qualified gunsmith who is familiar with black powder guns. But how do you find such a person? I've asked my friends and searched google and duckduckgo but haven't really found what I would consider good advice - only ads...

The(long) Story of a Homemade Cannon

According to Google street view, the tree is still there. Presumably, the ball is still embedded; he never bothered to dig it out. I'll post a photo soon - my home PC crashed. I have all my photos on an external backup so it will take awhile to rebuild my files.

The(long) Story of a Homemade Cannon

My Dad once made a cannon ”“ from scratch. When you’re a kid of about 12 years old, that’s the coolest thing that’s ever going to happen to you. It all started when he got his Atlas metal lathe. He taught himself how to turn down all sort of metal things and was generally looking around for...

    Caps Fire Unreliably

Update: I bought and installed a new nipple and it made the difference. But...(there's always a but) the caps are super tight. In fact, I can't push them down enough. The hammer, on first trigger pull, will drop and seat the cap and it will always fire on the second hammer drop. Grrrr...

    This gun will not fire

These are all excellent ideas and I appreciate the time it took for you to write them down. I will get in touch with my buddy - we usually try to fire this thing about once a year and we're due for another trip. Considering his lack of energy on the matter, perhaps I could talk him out of his...

    This gun will not fire

This is an issue that has been with me for years ”“ mostly because the gun is not mine and we only attempt firing it about once a year what with work, kids, etc. But a friend of mine owns a .50 flintlock ”“ I don’t recall the maker but I do know he assembled it from a kit. He says he has fired...

    Caps Fire Unreliably

I haven't taken any action yet since last night but thought I'd throw in one more fact. When I got the gun, the hammer seemed a bit stiff to pull back and would not lock at the half-**** position. I took it off and discovered that whatever lubricant had been in there had gotten really thick...

    Caps Fire Unreliably

Wow. I appreciate the many quick responses. I'm looking at the nipple and it doesn't look very sharp at the edges. To replace it would be an easy and cheap thing to try - I'll head up to the gun store this weekend. I'll also try chucking the thing in my drill and filing or sanding it a bit...

    Caps Fire Unreliably

I'm new here so be patient... I did do a search but I didn't find what I was looking for; if one of you magically produce a link I'll gladly read it. Anyway... I've recently inherited a CVA Kentucky Rifle from a brother-in-law. I've had trouble getting caps to fire. I bought a tin of CCI...

    Greetings from Oklahoma

Just now found this forum and am glad to have found it. I have fired many types of guns in my lifetime but recently inherited a CVA Kentucky rifle that was made from a kit back in the mid-to-late 1970's. Fired it for the first time last Saturday!
