After the extensive discussions here lately on cap and ball revolvers, I decided to buy one from Cabela's. I bought the Pietta 1858 New Army reproduction.

Can't wait!

I'd better figure out a range to go to and shoot.

I love mine! It took me a few sessions to figure out what she likes (#10 CCI caps, as turns out), but it is quite the fun toy! I haven't been able to make it to any cowboy matches lately so I took it to our church small-group shooting outing, and put lots of smiles one lots of faces :).

I bought one of these several months ago. Good quality, a beautiful looking piece and a great shooting gun.
Lots of fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate.
My 20 year old daughter was home from school last weekend and shot this gun with me, she thought it was a hoot.
Now she wants one( in pink!).
#11caps will work, but #10's work way better. The nipples are designed for 10's and they stay on better.
Good luck and have fun.
You'll be watching Cabela's for revolvers on sale so you can add to your arsenal. Ask me how I know;I've got a Pietta Buffalo or " Buntline" Special coming from them, supposed to be delivered tomorrow.
Looking forward to playing with that beauty.

Congrats! You will not be disappointed. I have owned several BP revolvers, but the '58 is by far the best! Bought mine last Summer from Cabela's and they have the best prices on cap and ball pistols that I have found

Congratulations! As a fellow newbie myself I just know you'll have a ball! And at the prices you guys can get them for over there, why wouldn't you start collecting?

.44 or .36 cal?

For your first loads for .44, try 23 gr. BP or Pyrodex P, with paper or felt wad between powder and ball. You can later adjust powder charges up or down to further fine tune, but 1858's and Colts all work great with 23 gr.

For .36 cal. 17 - 20 gr. produce amazing accuracy for me.

Sure, you'll have to loads it up really hot a few times for the flame, thunder and recoil, but for accuracy at the range, the lighter loads perform the best.

I got a 44 cal. Pietta 1858 Remington Buffalo on Tuesday.
I'm using 23 grains of FFF Goex and boy, does that shoot nice.
Very accurate right out of the box.
This is the fourth Pietta that I have bought from Cabela's.
These Pietta reproductions are a pretty good gun for pretty fair prices( at least from (Cabela's) so if you haven't gotten one yet, I would recommend one , I think you would enjoy it.

I bought the .44 and it came today! Looking forward to shooting it.

Well, I finally got a chance to shoot my new Pietta 1858 New Army. It was awesome.

It came with some balls (29 of them) and I fired them all. Not one single misfire.

One time, a cap got hung and I had to dislodge it before cocking the next round.

Lots of fun - cant wait to buy more ammo and go again.

You're hooked!!! I never go into the woods without mine. I don't own a Remy but I like to shoot my Ruger, 1860 Colt, 47 Walker, Spiller and Bur... Oh did I mention, they are like Lays. You can't just stop with one. :haha:

Right on! These guns are addictive. I have 4 revolvers, 2 single shot pistols and 6 side lock rifles.
This all started with a used perc. rifle from Kittery and look what it's (the addiction) has done to me.
I think(hope) I'm finished buying blackpowder guns.
BUT I must say this is one of the more enjoyable hobbies I have!!

I went out with a group of friends from our church today - out to a cabin in the woods owned by one of the families. I knew they had a small gun range nearby and the owner usually took a few people out there to plink.

So I took my black powder rifle and my new revolver.

Both were a big hit but especially the revolver. Five or six people took the opportunity to fire it and it was like a history lesson at the same time. Most had never even seen such a thing up close and were amazed that they were loaded by hand from the front.

Even with all the plinking with the modern gun, everyone seemed to really enjoy the smoke and flame from the black powder guns.

One among us was a woman who had never touched a gun before. She seems to be a natural or something since she shot better than most everyone else. (Myself included).

It was a good day.

Sounds like a day you wont soon forget. Have you considered making paper cartridges or getting a conversion cylinder? Or better yet, just a spare cylinder for your 58. The 58 was really ahead of its time.

I've watched a youtube video on making paper cartridges and that looks intriguing.

I've also admired the conversion cylinders. But I'll probably just get another normal cylinder one day.

I got a spare cylinder for my Pietta 58 and never use it because it makes the gun shoot to a different point of impact.
I bet this is more common than is talked about if the owner can shoot well enough to see it. Mike D.
