    New caplock rifle (pics)

Just an update. I got the new sight inserts and it made a huge difference. I was able to shoot cloverleafs at 30 yards so I went ahead and zeroed at that distance. Super happy. On the downside my dry patch ballistiol and water mix didn’t cut it because of the deep rifling. Had to run the...

    The dreaded clean bore shot

Yes, and if I fire a squib load then everything groups up just fine.

How long to make a rifle back in 1800?

I was about to suggest this video as well. It's a really great documentary!

    The dreaded clean bore shot

Yes sir I do! What I want to achieve is for my first shot of the day (from a clean bore) to hit the same poi the rest of my shots do without having to foul the bore first. Some say this is possible and others say it isn't. I'm looking for a "system" or ideas that work for others so I can try...

    The dreaded clean bore shot

I should have mentioned I run a spit patch down the bore between every shot.

    The dreaded clean bore shot

Interesting! So I'd pour powder, then a lubed patch on top, then seat my prb as usual but only for the first shot? I'll give that a try next range session. Maybe I could experiment with wads as well. I'll also have a closer look at my shot patches to see if there's any cutting going on.

    The dreaded clean bore shot

Very good point! That's something to think about. I picked up the gun second hand so I don't know. The front sight had been filed when I got it but I suspect it was very gently used and not fired much. Do you think the barrel has maybe not been "broken in" yet?

How does head on wind affect round balls?

Did someone summon a mathematician? Kidding of course. As others have noted the wind is never coming from a single direction at a constant speed unless under controlled conditions. However, if you want to tinker with the problem from a purely academic perspective you can. Sun City pretty...

    The dreaded clean bore shot

One thing I have yet to noodle out is how to deal with the clean bore shot. I'm hoping for some kind of solution or sage advice that doesn't involve me having to foul the bore (or leave it fouled) before I can trust where my first shot is gonna go. I've read that this can be overcome by...

    New caplock rifle (pics)

I just had #11 caps on hand already from my New Englander. Would you have left the musket nipple on instead?

    New caplock rifle (pics)

I think I found what I need. The insert measurements match up with the "small Redfield" globe sight. I ordered a sheet of them from Lee Shaver Gunsmithing.

    Practical corosivity of BP

I've seen people mention this but I don't understand the purpose.

    New caplock rifle (pics)

The gun works great but I didn't find a load it likes just yet. Best group of the day was with 70gr of 2f, .530 ball, 0.15 patch and measured about an inch ctc at 30 yards. I didn't spend a lot of time or powder trying to dial it in tighter because the front globe sight was giving me fits. Once...

    New caplock rifle (pics)

Thanks guys! I should have a better idea by the end of the day. I have 4 patch materials on hand to try out. The gun only came with one globe insert for the front sight. I'll just experiment with distance until the replacement set I ordered arrives (and hope those fit).

The front trigger won't fire the gun unless the rear has been set first if that's what ya mean.

    New to Flintlocks

Hi Bill, I finally figured out how to reliably get my flint rifle to fire after reading the info here. I'm also retired Army (AR, AV) 1995-2015. Lots to see and enjoy here.

    New caplock rifle (pics)

The lock is a Russ Hamm. Nothing special but seems to function just fine. Using the jag/patch method I believe the twist to be about 1:48 with deep rifling and the 36" barrel appears to be straight. I plan to check for prb accuracy before knocking my fillings out with the heavy loads this gent...

    New caplock rifle (pics)

Thanks! Nipple is already swapped. It was threaded for the same size I had laying around. The quest to identify the correct size inserts for that tunnel sight continues, however. I think it's a discontinued Lyman product. If so, I will likely just replace the whole thing.

    New caplock rifle (pics)

I just acquired this pretty 54 caliber rifle through an auction. It came with a neat surprise: shooter's logs, loading and zero data back to the early 80s! Interesting that at some point the gun was modified to use musket caps but there's no mention of that in the notes, which are fairly meticulous.
