    1849 Baby Dragoon 3rd series

Better pictures from more angles may help. $600 sounds high but I’m not an expert.

    Chambers IH finished.

Nice work. Looks like Barbie and Jim set you up. I just finished the PA Fowler and the VA rifle, Chambers. Great sets.

considering starting to sell cannons and need input

Steve, you can get steel slotted screws at trackofthewolf.com. I just replenished my supply. They take bluing or browning easily. And it is not being greedy, it is just reality that handmade cannot keep up with full on production outfits.

considering starting to sell cannons and need input

Rich hits the nail squarely, and I think the principle can be extended to most of us "noncommercials" on this forum. I for one enjoy building, but my results are not the perfection the public demands. So I build for me and for family. And heck, if I tried to price my time in to my hobby, no one...

    Stock dyeing and finishing questions

Sounds like this is a project for you and your son. Your son will likely still have the gun many years from now. You don’t want the butt to be splintered and frayed as will almost certainly happen without a proper butt plate. I suspect it was way harder to find pictures of guns without a butt...

    'Bone Hardening' your ramrod

I have never used an antler but have used a plain old chicken bone many times. Nice work on the grips. And yes, the grips will still take oil.

    'Bone Hardening' your ramrod

I’ve just called it boning, but the correct term is burnishing. Not magical but will make for a very smooth surface.

    Most 'Authentic' Hawken

Thanks for the comments, NotchyBob. Other than my first builds in 1978-80, which were CVA, This Stith is my only percussion build. It is very easy to shoot at the range due to its weight, but it would be a bear to lug in the field.

    Most 'Authentic' Hawken

On a whim, about the time this thread was started, I asked Jim Chambers "Who should I seek out if I were to build a Hawken rifle?" "Don Stith" was his one and only recommendation. I had the opportunity to speak to Don and ordered a parts set in .58 cal. He graciously supplied a beautiful maple...

Finally finished my PA fowler from Chambers. Very happy with looks. Will maybe see how it shoots this weekend.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I took advantage of some North Carolina heat and humidity to brown the barrel of my Fowler. Barrel is absorbing some motor oil overnight. In between coats, attached ramrod pipes. Coming right along.
