    Hawken Worth

You know.... The question is mute. Did anybody catch that the OP has no intention of ever selling this rifle? We could say it’s worth millions or 10 bucks. It really makes no difference,

Some basic questions, help me decide what I want/need.

I would recommend either the Woodsrunner or Colonial in .54. The Colonial is a PA style. The Woodsrunner is Virginia style. Both are appropriate to Rev-War period. Neither are appropriate for New England in 1775 until the VA/PAriflemen arrived from the South. I use 2ff or 3fff for prime and...

    Maybe a Cheaper way out?

False economy in my opinion. How much is a Traditions Kit? $499 not counting shipping How much is a RPL lock? $241 not counting shipping 499 241 740 +shipping..... So, roughly $840 for a traditions kit with a new L &R RPL lock. How much is the brass for the side plate? How stuff do you need...

What model is traditions wood stock

You are right. The Springfield Hawken did have a simple trigger. Also Springfield Hawken was electro-penciled in the barrel.

New member and my first muzzle loader

Wow Jackson! I was not expecting to see a Jacob Dickert as a a “first muzzleloader”!!!! Please post pictures. Yes there is a great field of interest. Dickert is one of the most famous makers of the Colonial/Federal period. The rifle could be worth 10s of thousands if it’s legitimate. What may...

What model is traditions wood stock

That looks like a Bass Pro Springfield Hawken. Traditions had these Spanish made rifles made and imported for various retailers. The same basic gun could go by different names depending on the retailer. Some could have specific fittings based on the retailer so a Springfield Hawken from Bass...

Running While Reloading Flintlocks - a necessary survival technique...

Those contemporaries wrote pure baloney then just as modern folks do now. Lewis Wentzel is one of those personalities that the more you dig, the less you actually know about the man. Some of the stuff is just so “over the top” that the truth is really hard to discern. The guy is an enigma...

Running While Reloading Flintlocks - a necessary survival technique...

Yep..... But are these primary or secondary sources? I have seen some of this too and I question a lot of it. Let’s take spit loading...... I have heard this being applied to Wentzel. I have my doubts. Spitting a ball down the bore on run... Nope...... Spit and tap was demonstrated on the TV...

Running While Reloading Flintlocks - a necessary survival technique...

So..... I got my rifle out. How can I load this rifle quickly and more importantly load it well quickly. I come from a fire service background. A rookie has to learn to be geared up and packed out very quickly. Not only do they have to be “packed out” very quickly, it has to be done...

Running While Reloading Flintlocks - a necessary survival technique...

This is a very interesting display. This is an example of tap loading with a bare ball. I commend B P Maniac Shooter for this demonstration. I do agree somewhat with this but I think we need to take a closer look. There is a lot of assumptions that may or may not be true. I question the...

    Help with identifying a lock.

Those parts are filed and fitted. It’s really easier to build a new rifle than to replace hardware. Sometimes you might get lucky but..... It would be a very tedious endeavor with possibly disappointing results. Also..... A Siler is not really a good lock for a Southern iron mounted rifle.

    Help with identifying a lock.

Mr. Garner still builds rifles. Your rifle is probably a lot newer than the 1970s. It could be really recent. How long has your friend had it? What “hardware” do you need? Yes, that is a Small Siler.

    Lead Sinkers

For generations locals mostly kids, would scour the site of the Fort Mims Massacre for lead ball and shot to make fishing sinkers.

    Raised dovetails

It’s pretty simple. Like a lot of things it takes some practice. On a rifle build, one way to practice is to try it on the barrel lugs. Since I assume that’s done I would do this....... Get a piece of square stock. This solid piece of steel needs to as wide as a side flat maybe wider. Clamp...

    Traditions St. Louis Hawken stock....

out of the can...... Tung oil is less trouble and more forgiving. BLO....can be used but you have to be careful to let the thin coats dry.... this can take a awhile. Applied too thick, it will never dry and be gummy. BLO really needs a drier. True oil, tried an true are BLO base products...

The last of the trade guns .

The basic NW pattern could have been made past 1900. There seems to be no definite cut off. A lot of this may come from guns in inventory and not actually produced. I may be wrong but that’s how I understand it.

Thoughts on who made this 1861

I seem to remember H&R making these. I remember those having case colors on the lock.

    What lock? Davis Colonial

I built a nice Gillespie rifle a few years ago and I had a choice if a Chambers late Ketland or a Davis Common. I chose the Davis because to me it fit the “look” better. Oh how I wish I had chose the Ketland. Now this pretty nice rifle has a mediocre at best lock. It might shoot.... It...
