    Finishing A Fowler Build

Let’s look at this more. Options.... Counter sink and polish a concave face on the breech plug. Notch the edge of plug face at the touch hole. This should open up lock options. There’s things you can do in the breech that can overcome touch hole placement issues.

    Building concept.....Waiting for the turn

I posting off my phone so that’s why posted some pics with no comment. I have not quite mastered the phone thing. I’m proud of that trigger guard. The buttplate....Echhh. It’s now usable but no it’s no masterpiece. I think it’s going to work out.

Netting 28 ga Fowler Disassembled - Detailed Photos

1 sound good just go slow. I like Balistol. 2 It’s creepy. Personally It’s in period style but the image has modern influence IMHO. 3 To me looks like a “Chief’s grade Trade gun. 4 It looks like walnut to me 5 the sitting fox is a common stamp for Northwest trade guns

    Building concept.....Waiting for the turn

I’m still fitting it to the stock. It’s close. It’s just stuck on it for the picture. Of course final clean up will be after it’s fitted and the stock shaped.

    Building concept.....Waiting for the turn

A few years back a fellow got rather upset when he sent a rifle to sell to Track of the Wolf. The appraiser stated... This rifle reeks of impatience. The builder did not wait for the turn. Probably the greatest mistake a new builder can make is impatience thus not waiting on the turn...

Chambers smooth rifle with 20g barrel

The Chambers Smoothrifle, PA Fowler, and English Fowler/Fusil are 13 7/8 LOP. I do believe that is the SR mentioned above. It has a 46” bbl.

Chambers smooth rifle with 20g barrel

I’m not sure. I do know that their smooth rifle is based on the Newcomer rifle. They also offer a couple of fowling guns so I would have to go to their site and double check the specs.... As far as “LOP”... Shorter?.... It can be made shorter by moving the buttplate forward in the building...

    Which rasps

They are not as good as they used to be as Mike pointed out. A Nicholson #50 should do fine for this project. I love mine and am asking too much of it right now. I’m going to have get a couple good rasps soon. I also like to use a cheap course rat-tail file for light shaping work. That # 50...

Chambers smooth rifle with 20g barrel

I don’t know if the “Mac” actually knew this....but The Chambers Smooth Rifle was inspired by the Newcomer Rifle or RCA 119. Edit.....😡 Newcomer Not Haymaker!!!!! That rifle was stocked with heavy English fowling gun influence including the fowling gun furniture.

    Which rasps

If you know of a usable gunstocking rasp for 15 bucks please let me know.🙄 Believe me, I have tried the bargain basement/box store stuff. That stuff may chew through a 2x4 while making tweaks on the chicken coop but they are not gunstocking rasps. They do work remarkably well with play-dough...

    Don't Carve That Stock!

I guess I’ll comment. The solution or answer to to all this is rather simple. Study the material culture of the period. Do not make the Colonial-Federal era into a 1980s trailer park. 90% of the comments and 99% of the soapboxes would not exist on this thread if there was a basic knowledge...

Installing set trigger in an 1800’s original rifle

The lock could be tuned and/or the trigger bar adjusted. I would try that first.

    Tang thickness question

It will not hurt at all to thin that tang. You will see many SMRs with their tangs rather thin. A thinner tang may also help with making the bend in the wrist. Many SMRs will have their tangs terminating with a arrow, round or teardrop shape. Through this went the tang screw. Most Southern...

    bluing lock

I can't stress enough to use a mainspring vise. Do not use vise grips. If you break a spring, you'll end up getting a mainspring vise with your new spring, so use the right tool for this. If it's an odd ball lock, you may have trouble finding a spring. So, use a mainspring vise. You may want to...
