    Hunting with Smoothbore

Is that a homemade cartridge box ? It looks pretty good if it is, I made one for my bess and it definitely isn't anything to brag about in the good looking department.

    Hunting with Smoothbore

I have achieved 83 yard accuracy with my Brown Bess but I cheated and made a rear sight for it. Some smoothies have a rear sight on them and you'll see them appear from time to time. Most of the time I won't shoot at an animal more than 60 yards out but I really want them in the 30 to 50 yard...

    Hunting with Smoothbore

I use Bismuth shot in my Brown Bess when waterfowl hunting, it is soft so it doesn't scar the inside of the barrel. It is really available in BB Shot size and is sold in 4 or 5lb bags for $30USD. I don't like plastic encasements because plastic melts inside your barrel causing a pain in your...

    Thank you for the correction

New addition to my smoothie arsenal

There are only George Regina Proof marks on the barrel all repro ofc. There is no marking to say where it was made.

New addition to my smoothie arsenal

Yea I have loaded some stout shot loads, yesterday for the hell of it I loaded 120g FF with and over powder wad and card, then 3oz No.4 Shot and and over shot card. It digested it and blew it out fine. I loaded it 5 more times like that.

New addition to my smoothie arsenal

I was using a .735 round ball with a .010 patch and 120g of FF powder. I didn't see where there was any heavy recoil. It was really no different then if you were to shoot a Pedersoli or any Longer Brown Bess.

New addition to my smoothie arsenal

The other day I was shooting on my farm with my friend and his father had come over to do a little shooting himself. I was after his 12 gauge Fusil de Chasse when he turned me onto something else he had for sale. He had in his possession a carbine Brown Bess with "Tower" marked on its lock. This...

    Pedersoli Brown Bess light rusting

I have no problems of rusting insde of my bess it is just the outside, I guess humidity buildup is causing the rusting so I ordered some RIG to see what it does thank you for the advice.

    Pedersoli Brown Bess light rusting

I own a Short Land Pattern Brown Bess made by Pedersoli and I have owned it since March of this year. I have fired it and cleaned it many times but havent used it since May 5th so roughly 2 months since last use. I noticed it is starting to get rust forming on the lock screw, lock jaw and the...

Load Questions for an Anthony Zoli Harper's Ferry Rifle

Does a Davis lock improve the ignition like it does for a Euro Arms ?

Load Questions for an Anthony Zoli Harper's Ferry Rifle

Posting this for a friend who recently purchased an Anthony Zoli Harpers Ferry Rifle. I'm sure there are a large group of people who have seen or even use these rifles and know what the best loads are and what the maximum loads are. The rifle is .58 caliber as I am sure most know here on the...

Which is the better rifle type ?

The man bought a 1792 contract rifle, he said it in his post above. Those are some cool rifles.

Which is the better rifle type ?

Glad to see you found a rifle, the 1792 is a cool rifle and one of these days I will make one for myself but right now I like my Bess too much. Where are you at in Maryland ? I am out on the Shore about 9 miles from Centerville. If you ever need a place to shoot PM me and I will give you my...

Which is the better rifle type ?

Well darn, I guess you are abandoning deer hunting with your Brown Bess. Well if I was to buy one of these rifles I would be torn between the Renegade and the 1792. The man who bored that Renegade is good at his craft and Mr. Hoyt delivers. The 1792 Contract Rifle is just neat because it is out...

    Differences in Smooth Bore firearms

Patching the ball has seemed to improve accuracy for my Brown Bess tenfold. I started out with a .715 ball in a paper cartridge and at 50 yards I would sometimes hit paper. Now with a .735 ball and a tight patch inside a paper cartridge the entire barrel is filled up and with a rear sight I make...

    Differences in Smooth Bore firearms

I actually have a corner bracket rear sight on my brown bess hence my accuracy with it, I made it out of corner bracket so it is like a rear peep sight. His FDC however only has a front blade sight.

    Differences in Smooth Bore firearms

Yea his FDC has a Colerain 44" 12 gauge .725 bore barrel, it originally had a 16 gauge barrel on it that was .665 bore but he decided to go bigger in 2014.

    Differences in Smooth Bore firearms

I would assume the .50 and .54 are rifles, I have only ever hunted with a ML Rifle once and it was a caplock .50cal (I never saw a deer that day) other than that all my shooting has been done with a smoothie and it has kind of grown on me due to its versatility as a shotgun type weapon. Have you...
