    Quintessential SxS

I have a Navy arms percussion 12 SxS, cylinder bore on both sides that I think is as classic as they get. Only thing any classier might be a flintlock. Bryan

What inletting chisels do I need, and where is the cheapest/ best place to

How sharp are these tools out of the box? Looks interesting, but I don't think I want to buy any more lower priced tools that I completely have to rework just to get an edge on. If they are sharp to start with, I may try a set of them. Bryan

    fiber wad lube

I've been using Crisco on mine. I melt the Crisco, put the wads in the pan to let them soak up all they will, then place them on paper plates covered with paper towel to soak up any excess. They are somewhat dry to the feel when done, but you can see the lube in them when you start them down the...

What inletting chisels do I need, and where is the cheapest/ best place to

Hey, folks! Newbie builder here. What inletting chisels and gouges should I start out with, and where is the best place to buy them? I bought some cheap ones, have been working on sharpening them without a lot of success, and I think I may have to spend more money to get what I need. The rifle...

    polishing brass

I've polished it down to 600 grit emory, then used Flitz metal polish. That stuff is wonderful for polishing metal. Bryan

    "how to" book

I second the " Gunsmith of Grenville County", probably one of the best out there that I have read. For a more visual approach, you may want to check out American Pioneer Video, they have a couple from Hershel House that are very good as well. I just got them, and man are they something! Bryan

    Sharpening inletting tools

Thanks for all the replies, fellas! Do most of you use some sort of jig to keep the angle true, or is it an eyeball affair? By the way, I never could really sharpen a knife with just a stone, and bought a Lansky sharpener, had "scary sharp" knives every since! Bryan

    just in pedersoli 12 guage

Nice deal! I paid $395 for mine a couple of years ago. I just patterned the heck out of mine before our turkey season opened, and I found the load to work best in mine as follows: 80 grains of pyrodex( am going to try real BP after season), 1 over powder card, 1 fiber wad lubed with Crisco, 1...

    Sharpening inletting tools

Hi, Folk's. Lookin for some advise. I bought some tools to inlet my first rifle( first real build, my first kit was a CVA). I didn't buy expensive tools so that I can see if I really want to do this before I drop that much cash on the tools. The sets I bought are definately needing a proper...

    Cabelas Hawken, Patterning Question

Adding more powder will definately cause the ball to impact higher at distance, but I'd follow the advise given above first, then see where I needed to go from there. Bryan

    Help my Pattern Stinks

Probably will take some work is right! I went to the range two days with my Navy double 12 last week, and tested several different loads. I finally arrived on 80 grains of powder, 1 OP card, 1 full wad, 1 1/2 oz. shot, and a OS card. I finally figured out that I wasn't using enough shot, but 1...

    Bag making helper

You might want to consider getting a thonging chisel from Tandy Leather, and pre punching the holes with that. Sure makes stitching by hand a whole lot easier. If you use a saddle stitch, you are going to have a piece that will last quite a long time. The stitching awl they sell works OK, but...

    Noone Is Authentic!

Unless I've missed his second post, looks like this fella just stirred up a hornets nest and backed off. I'd wait to see what his real question is. Plenty of good advise here, but a lot of opinions too and unless you have real specific documentable questions, that is likely what you will get...

Holster and gear for a pistol

Thanks for the heads up, Tom. I already joined the wholesale club, and you're right, it pays off well! You also get the classes for free at our local store, so it is really a bargain. The holster and belt I'm making now is from their kit, and I think the next one will be from scratch. My next...
