If only I could get this lazy old rifle to clean the house! All it seems to want to do is go out and smoke up my powder.

    TC sights

I have several factory rear sights off of older TC's if that is what you are looking for. They are adjustable, kind of modern looking but not "hi-viz". If interested PM your addy and I can drop one in the mail.

What do you call the brassy thingy on a short starter?

"round concave brass thingy". You sound like my ex-bosses wife when she was describing the "big yellow diggy thingy" that was in her yard. It was a backhoe. I would call it a brass ramrod tip?

    Full stock 54

Oooh La La, that is sweet! I like that trigger guard, the factory TC guard has to be the most awkward one I have used.

I traded my wife for a really nice rifle, never been happier! :rotf: But seriously, I have no wife, but lots of guns :blah:

    Solid Brass Ramrod

I have 2 TC Hawkens, One has a 32" GM barrel and balances very well, easy to hold steady. I use a wooden rod on that one. My other has the stock 28" barrel and feels better with a solid brass rod under it. Makes it balance like a longer barrel. I would think on a longer barreled rifle a solid...

    roundball rebound safety

All of our targets are free hanging metal also, never had any bounce-backs I've heard of. I did shoot myself between the eyes with a 22 many years ago when the bullet bounced back off an old tractor tire in a fence row.

    Newbe

How can you sleep at night? Around here just the gun with only one barrel and no more would sell for $350 or so.

    Tooks my trade rifle out

Here is a real clever trick... Take a piece of note paper, write LOADED on it with a red magic marker, and tape it to the barrel! JK :v Actually I am in the habit of dropping my ramrod down the barrel before loading on a clean gun, easy to tell if loaded that way. Don't really know how or why...

    20 Grains

Another suggestion... pour 20gr of powder down the barrel, tap it down gently with a bore-sized jag on your rod, see if you hit metal. If you just get a dull thud you know the breech is full and powder is in the bore. If you get a sharper hit then you need more powder, or some filler to compress...

    Re-creating an early longrifle

I often wondered about never seeing any kind of strap on longrifles and such in old pictures. Growing up hunting in the northeast, I know how handy it is to be able to throw your rifle over your shoulder to have an extra hand to climb a tree, or a ledge, or drag out a deer, etc. I supposed in...

    Re-creating an early longrifle

That is a sweet-looking rifle! And if you will pardon my ignorance... I see what looks to me to be a swivel for a sling or carry strap to the rear of the trigger guard, but no means to attach the front. I have seen old military rifles with slings, but not on a hunting gun of that era. Could you...

    How critical the nipple?

These cap guns are soooo complicated! Maybe I should just stick to my flinter? :surrender:

    Finishing aluminum??

I use the hand over hand method to ram the rod but when I get down to the small end (1/4") I just don't feel comfortable. My Buffalo Hunter is basically a sporterized carbine length Zouave musket, not much room for a bigger rod. The original musket used a small diameter steel rod as I recall. I...

    Finishing aluminum??

I agree and use a good hickory rod in most of my guns, but just don't feel comfortable loading my .58 with a rod that small. I would hate to be several miles back in the hills with a broken rod or worse a punctured hand. Perhaps I'll try brass, I can darken it with a fouled patch. Never thought...

    Finishing aluminum??

I recently bought an older, used .58 cal. Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter. The thing comes with a silly wooden ramrod that is about 5/16's tapering to 1/4". Scary trying to ram a tightly patched ball that big with that little rod. I used a heavy range rod for loading so far, but want a rod that fits...

Robert, I DO like that patchbox! Thanks all for all the info, looks like I am good to go. :hatsoff:

    Double rifles?

I have been fascinated with double rifles for a long time, never owned one though, hope to someday. I have owned several double shotguns and one barrel usually has a tighter choke than the other, basically giving you a good pattern for long range or short depending on the barrel fired. I have...

    Lyman or Thompson

As the others have posted, they do fit differently. I own 2 TC's and like the way they fit me, I have fired a couple Lymans and they are nice also. Two things the others did not mention... First, the TC's usually have a 1-48 twist, kind of fussy on loads for round balls in my experience...
