Old and New Percussion Cap Tins

Those are primers for UK designed shotgun cartridges which were in use until very recently. They were sold in UK as "Surefire" primers, but were made up with the anvil fitted. The Australian version may have been packaged separately for shipping purposes.. Eley Kynoch shotgun cartridges did not...

    Undersized chambers in revolvers???

I don't know if it is has come up in previous posts, and as it refers to (breech loading shush!) arms, but Webley revolvers always had tapered chambers. The reason for this was that the .455 revolver used a Minie type bullet with a hollow base. By tapering the mouth of the chamber to be smaller...

    ... or "Stellite"? (har har...!)

    Pedersoli Enfield

The mould that Parker Hale used to recommend was the Lyman 575213, which is the one I have for my PH Musketoon, and which shoots very well out to 200. The mould I have however casts a bullet with only a shallow, flat based cavity, and the mould Midway is advertising has the traditional. deep...

normal/safe for someone who only has a percussion rifle to keep loaded without the cap for home def?

.. of course! However I would have thought that in most of the cases we are discussing, the individual concerned has already contributed to the gene pool...?

normal/safe for someone who only has a percussion rifle to keep loaded without the cap for home def?

I am well aware that this discussion does not affect me on this side of the pond, however I do come across significant numbers of muzzle loaders from the antique trade that are loaded and have been for years. I have just extracted the remains of a firework from a muzzle loader that seems to have...

    Shotgun Restoration

I would strip it, boil it, card it and see what is left.. You then have a four way split decision.. 1. You have at least arrested the deterioration and are in a position to preserve what is left as a historic non firing artifact. 2. You may be able to restore the gun to working condition with...

    flintlock lock dimensions

Flintlocks were never made from plans. That never really happened before Robbins and Lawrence got their act together in the 1840s.. Flintlocks were hand fitted, just like.... Locks! It all depends on where you are starting.. If you are using castings or a kit, much of the design decisions have...

    Black powder Storage Question

The secret to storing Black Powder is to keep the moisture out. BP is not that sensitive to temperature changes provided this does not result in sucking in moist warm air and allowing it to condense on the inside of the container. I have come across many old metal powder cans which have rusted...

Vintage Replica Wheellocks made in Spain

In UK a shotgun is a smoothbore firearm with a minimum barrel length of 24" and less than a 2" bore.. Wheelocks are bulky and expensive.. although I would never say never, I would think a double wheelock is almost impossible.. It would certainly not look like anything produced after 1800. The...

    Practical corosivity of BP

Sheath/Barricade is what is known as a polarised compound that chemically bonds to the metal surface. It does provide a significantly longer term corrosion protection than oils and greases that simply provide a mechanical barrier..

    Black powder Storage Question

You must of course abide by any local laws and ordinances, however there has been work done recently on storage for propellent that suggests that keeping it in steel containers is not a good idea.. Steel magazines for high explosives work by stopping any incoming fragments setting off the...

    Black powder Storage Question

You need to think about what you are trying to achieve when storing explosives. I would suggest there are three, not necessary compatible objectives: 1. Safety. Essentially you do not want the explosives you are keeping to become a hazard, or at least to keep the hazard to acceptable levels...

    Mixing Powder

Hi Pukka, I was trying to inject a little stability into the discussion.. As I am sure we all agree, there are some phenomenon associated with propellants which are complex, difficult to reproduce and even now, not fully understood. There is also a problem that the received wisdom based on...

    Cleaning With Urine

Frankly, anyone exposing themselves on a battlefield and producing urine in a controlled and directed fashion would have to have an admirable degree of sangfroid! I suspect most emissions of urine on the battlefield would be involuntary...! ..good story though!

    Mixing Powder

Whatever works for you is good..! My experience is more with solid projectiles than shot, although I shoot both muzzle and breech loading shotguns. Pattern formation is not an area I have strayed into so I must hold my hand up here. I know something of the fun and games getting sabots to...

    Practical corosivity of BP

I have to disagree with you a bit there.. Chlorine ions from Perchlorate are very reactive! Pyrodex residue is much more corrosive than BP! The residue from pyro and flash powder containing perchlorate is extremely corrosive!

    Mixing Powder

Greener was an excellent gunsmith and businessman and held many strong opinions, not all of which have stood the test of time! This is not to say that much of the mid 19th C research work is to be ignored. As Kay Smith said in her lecture, not much research has continued, at least in the public...

    Mixing Powder

Ah.. I seem to have stepped into something of a stramash here as they say in my part of the world.. May I make a few observations.. Firstly black powder does not detonate.. it, as smoothy points out, deflagrates which means in simple terms that a flame front surrounds each powder grain, which...
