Original Rear Sight On Lyman Great Plains Rifle?

One caution about the original sight: It has a wandering zero, i.e., it wiggles a tad from side to side. Once zeroed, you can shim it so that it is tight, or degrease it prior to installation, zero it, then trickle some thin Crazy Glue in to hold your setting. (Don't ask....!)

    GPR Trigger Questions

Dixon's used to be a service/repair centor [Investarms] GPR's. Call them and see if they have the proper length, pitch, thread screw. Also, I took my lock apart and used a Cratex wheel in my Dremel to smooth all bearing surfaces. Ditto the sear where the trigger levers bear on it (polish...

    February 2023 Postal Match

Very tough target for an indoor range with poor lighting! I just got back from firing this one @ 15 yd. offhand with my .22 Ruger Gov't. Model and didn't do well at all. A larger caliber RB would be a better choice, especially if you can shoot outdoors. Unfortunately, no BP firearms are...

    February 2023 Postal Match

Now that our printer is working, I may have to try that target. However, where I am currently there are mostly (only?) indoor ranges and BP is verboten. Ergo, 15 yd. with my .22 pistol may have to suffice, but not for record of course.

Pedersoli ball mold - "Nominal" size ?

"Nominal" means just that. I.e., moulds cast to the diameter stamped on them, but few hit that mark exactly. To wit, I have many moulds, both CF and BP, including custom ones from LBT, CBE (Australia), NOE, Tanner, but not one drops a ball or [elongated] bullet to an exact diameter. In ML's...

    Need advice Re, Moose milk

The late Dutch Schoultz was an advocate of the oiled, but dry patches, but they didn't work well for me. For target work, I use 1 Ballistol : 6 water and use the patches wet. I.e., I squeeze most of the excess liquid out of them: Never had a problem with misfires and the bore stays reasonably...

    January Postal Match Target

Don't feel bad, Andrew as each of us has done that and most of us don't practice every day. Trust me, I've shot much worse than that on woods walks.

    January Postal Match Target

Gary, Try 1 Ballistol : 6 or 7 parts water for a patch lube, leaving your patches wet (but not dripping), Alternatively, cook up some of Stumpy's Moose Snot, using olive or peanut oil if you can't get castor oil as per Stumpy's recipe. Either one should relieve the fouling/hard loading...

    Graf's labeled powder

All, Not long ago, Graff & Sons' BP was made by Wano, more recently by GOEX (I peeled the label off one of the "cans" and that' what it said. Both have worked very well for me, but I think I'd give a slightly higher mark to the Graff/GOEX brand.

Cleaning - After Round Ball vs Maxi or Real

The only thing different that I do is to damp swab the bore after every 2nd shot (hunting) or if target shooting, after each shot. Otherwise the final clean up is the same. Btw, I've never got bore leading as a consequence of shooting Maxi-Balls or REALs.

PID temperature controller for Lee 420 pot settings?

Greg, The thermometer I mentioned is analog, adjustable, and reliable. As for the thermostat on the Lee furnace, if you remove the top cover (with the adjustment knob), you can gently clean the thermostat's contacts, then gently bend the blade down to raise the furnace temperature. These...

PID temperature controller for Lee 420 pot settings?

Maybe I'm a Luddite, but a casting thermometer will cost a whole lot less than a PID device and won't degrade over time. I've used a "Tel Tru" branded one for my Lee furnaces for years and can highly recommend it. Btw, my furnaces don't vary much in temperature, and I remove the thermometer...

    Powder loads for smoothie

My Green River Forge 20 ga. (.618" -.619" bore) does better with lower charges of BP, 65 - 75 gr. FFg, at closer ranges with a patched RB. What I've discovered is that a RB between .597" (Lee & Tanner moulds) and .600 x .603" (out of round Lyman mould) is quite accurate with a patch between...
